Jon Stewart’s Ill-Advised Mockery of TV Under Trump Administration

Jon Stewart, erstwhile host of the Daily Show, broke his typical schedule of appearing only on Mondays and graced the audience with his presence on a Thursday. This not-so-scheduled appearance took place in the wake of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension by ABC. Stewart, in his quirk, attempted to present an exaggerated rendition of how a television program under Trump administration’s control would potentially materialize. He presented this narrative in front of a faux backdrop of gold, possibly hinting at the White House’s new choice of office decor embellished with gold plating.

With a concocted mix of feigned praise and supposed fear, Stewart started his illustrative program. He launched into his monologue stating that it would be another engaging, laughter-inducing, and administration-compliant segment. However, on a closer look, his words seemed to drip with sarcasm. He went on to express that any contention regarding the government’s infringement on freedom of speech is merely a cynical and calculated ploy.

Stewart opined that this supposed ploy was a mere smoke screen. Its purpose, in his opinion, was providing a blurry vision to hide an extraordinary convergence of power and solitary intimidation that was devoid of principles. He further taunted that this was in stark contrast to the norms of a constitutional republic governance. His words were laced with subtle mockery, as they flowed effortlessly, easing the audience into his opinions and encouraging their laughter.

Bringing the issue of the recent ABC suspension to light, Stewart kept his jest unabated. He said that even prior to the ‘Jason Kringle’ crisis at ABC, several individuals across America were misusing their right to free speech. What followed next was a sarcastic guide on how not to talk about one’s political nemesis.

He played numerous clips from conservative media, which vehemently condemned characterizing political opponents using terms like “Nazis, fascists and enemies of the state”. They also held an adverse view towards people who considered individuals, ‘whom we disagree with as somehow being less than human.’ Stewart’s insinuations seemed to be hidden behind his sharp wit and clever use of irony.

To further affirm his point, Stewart played Donald Trump’s past speeches where he referred to Democrats, primarily former President Joe Biden, as an ‘enemy of the state’, and termed Nancy Pelosi ‘an animal.’ Stewart concluded his satirical monologue with a fanfare dedicated to the ‘dear leader.’ He also had the Daily Show’s revolving hosts and correspondents join in.

The fabricated glorification ranged from Jordan Klepper’s empty reassurances about Trump’s physical appearance to Ronny Chieng showering compliments on his ‘larger than normal size.’ Such exaggerated praise further intensifies the theme of parody in Stewart’s performance.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! faced a suspension from ABC, which came into effect the previous Wednesday. A pressure campaign spearheaded by the Trump administration and backed by conservative media was a determining factor in these turn of events. The campaign was initiated following Kimmel’s remarks on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a well-known right-wing activist. Kimmel faced backlash for his statements that conservatives were attempting to take advantage politically of Kirk’s tragic death.

The news of Kimmel’s suspension was not taken lightly by former President Barack Obama, nor by ardent fans of the show. Obama criticized the Trump administration’s actions, claiming that after many years of complaining about cancel culture, the administration itself had indulged in threatening regulatory action against media companies. He suggested the current administration was insisting on silencing or firing reporters and commentators with opposing views.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was announced to end on CBS in 2026, earlier this summer. The explanation from the network indicated that financial causes were behind its sudden decision. However, the pulling of Colbert’s top-rated show led to heightened criticism, particularly considering the timing of this announcement, which occurred shortly after Colbert critiqued Paramount. Paramount is CBS’ parent company which had decided on a settlement agreement with Trump.

At that moment, despite the plethora of negations towards Trump’s administration, Jon Stewart stood by Colbert’s side. Stewart’s actions raised questions on his stance, casting a shadow over his approach towards the current administration and the mainstream media in these contentious times.
