Trump Promises Comey Indictment Is ‘About Justice’ — Not Revenge: ‘There Will Be Others’
President Donald Trump said Friday that the federal indictment of former FBI Director James Comey is “about justice” and warned reporters that Comey would not be the last.
Comey was indicted this week on charges of lying to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding. Speaking to reporters before boarding Marine One for a trip to the Ryder Cup in New York, Trump dismissed claims from liberal media that the case was political payback.
“I think there’ll be others,” Trump said. “These were corrupt, radical Left Democrats. Comey, essentially, was worse than a Democrat. But no, there’ll be others — that’s my opinion. What they’ve done is terrible. You can’t let this happen to a country.”
The president stressed that the case represents accountability, not vengeance. “This is about justice. Really, it’s not revenge. It’s also about the fact that you can’t let this go on. They are sick, radical Left people, and they can’t get away with it,” Trump told Fox News’ Peter Doocy.
Trump repeatedly called Comey a “dirty cop” who thought he would never be caught. “He lied. He lied a lot,” Trump said. “This wasn’t ‘maybe’ or ‘I don’t remember.’ He gave a very specific answer, and he repeated it. The problem for him is he got caught.”
The indictment focuses on Comey’s September 2020 testimony to Congress on his handling of the FBI’s Russia investigation. Prosecutors argued he knowingly misled lawmakers about his authorization of leaks tied to the Trump probe and Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.
Comey is the first former senior official indicted in connection with the Russia collusion investigation, which Trump has long branded a “witch hunt” and a hoax. The statute of limitations on Comey’s testimony was set to expire at the end of September.
