Bud Light Sales Continue to PLUMMET in Every US Region by Over 20%
LISTEN HERE:
Bud Light, a popular beer brand, has experienced a decline in sales since its parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, collaborated with a transgender influencer on social media for a promotional campaign last month. In the week ending April 29, the beer giant sold $71.5 million worth of Bud Light, marking a significant 23% drop compared to the same period last year, according to data from Bump Williams Consulting. Furthermore, Budweiser sales have plummeted to $31.5 million this year, reflecting an 11% decrease. Anheuser-Busch’s other brands, such as Budweiser, Michelob Ultra, Busch Light, and Natural Light, have also suffered.
The ongoing sales slump commenced shortly after Bud Light partnered with Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender TikTok influencer, San Diego-based trans rights activist, and actress. In a promotional Instagram video posted on April 1, Mulvaney showcased Bud Lite cans featuring her image and commemorating her ‘365 days of girlhood’ series, which documents her gender transition. The collaboration with Mulvaney, however, sparked widespread outrage among conservatives, causing many to call for a boycott of the brand.
Notably, Kid Rock and Travis Tritt, renowned singers and conservatives, were among those who expressed their displeasure with Bud Light’s decision to work with the transgender influencer. Despite the negative reaction, Mulvaney has received both hateful and supportive comments online. The 26-year-old boasts an impressive following, with 10.8 million TikTok followers and 1.8 million on Instagram.

When reached for comment on this issue, Anheuser-Busch did not provide an immediate response. It wasn’t until April 14 that Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth issued a statement expressing regret for the division caused by the company’s partnership with Mulvaney. He did not directly mention the promotional effort, however.
Following the statement, two Anheuser-Busch InBev executives who oversaw the controversial marketing collaboration were placed on leave. The company’s subsequent attempts to distance itself from the campaign only exacerbated backlash from the LGBTQ+ community. As a result, some bars have removed all Anheuser-Busch products from their menus.
Anheuser-Busch Global CEO Michel Doukeris acknowledged that Budweiser continues to face conservative backlash due to public misunderstandings regarding its partnership with the social media influencer. He stated, ‘We will need to continue to clarify the fact that this was one can, one influencer, one post, and not a campaign, and repeat this message for some time.’
During an earnings call last week, Doukeris noted that it’s too early to determine the full impact of the ongoing backlash, but he remains confident that the company will learn from the experience and emerge stronger. He added, ‘I know that we have the people and the partners to learn from that and to continue to move forward and to come out stronger.’
It is worth noting that not all Anheuser-Busch brands have suffered due to the controversy. According to Bump Williams Consulting, sales of Coors Light and Miller Lite have risen 20% year over year, while Keystone Light has seen a 14% increase.
AB InBev’s stock closed at $66 per share on Wednesday. Although this represents a 6% drop since the end of March, it still marks an overall increase of approximately 14% compared to the previous year.

This situation serves as a reminder that businesses must tread carefully when engaging in promotional partnerships, as they can inadvertently alienate certain customer demographics. While it’s important for companies to be inclusive and embrace diversity, they must also consider the potential consequences of their marketing decisions.
It remains to be seen whether Bud Light sales will bounce back in the coming months or if the controversy surrounding the Mulvaney promotion will have lasting effects on the brand. Regardless, the company will need to develop and execute strategic marketing initiatives to win back the trust of disgruntled customers.
Moreover, Anheuser-Busch will have to learn valuable lessons from this experience to avoid similar PR mishaps in the future. Balancing between inclusivity and appeasing conservative consumers will be a challenging endeavor for the beverage giant.
As public opinion becomes increasingly polarized, major corporations must navigate a delicate balance to maintain broad consumer appeal. Failing to do so can result in significant setbacks and negatively impact overall sales.
Ultimately, the Bud Light controversy underscores the importance of conducting thorough research and understanding the potential ramifications of marketing campaigns. As businesses continue to evolve, they must carefully balance the interests of various consumer demographics to remain relevant and maintain market share.
In the coming months, the industry will closely monitor the effects of the Mulvaney promotion on Bud Light and Anheuser-Busch at large. It will also serve as a valuable case study for other companies seeking to bolster their brands while navigating the increasingly complex realm of consumer expectations and societal values.
