Remembering the Best Base Stealers in Yankees History

Swiping bases is a crucial skill reflecting the batting capacity of an athlete. The roster of the New York Yankees boasts of accomplished hitters who master this skill, thus playing a significant role in the team’s victories. Interested in learning who these accomplished base stealers in the history of the New York Yankees are? You’re in the right place. Derek Jeter, a sought-after name in the Major League Baseball (MLB) scene, had a remarkable career of two decades. With his exceptional performance, he carved a sterling reputation. Being a consistent entity in the Yankees’ lineup throughout his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the team’s success. Between 1995 and 2014, this beloved personality, known as ‘The Captain,’ successfully swiped 358 bases, contributing considerably to his offensive prowess, thus making him a valuable entity to the Yankees.

Jeter’s impressive career and established reputation led him to be welcomed into the Hall of Fame in 2020, marking his place in baseball history. Another noteworthy name in the game is that of Ricky Henderson, an acclaimed stolen bases king, with a record of roughly 1406 bases swiped to his name. Despite his tenure with the Yankees being limited to only five seasons from 1985 to 1989, he managed to amass 326 bases. His record remained unbeaten until Jeter surpassed him in 2011. Henderson is not only known for his total stolen base count but also holds the record for the most number of stolen bases in a single season, a feat he achieved by scoring 130 bases in the 1982 season.

Moreover, Henderson holds the record for most lead-off home runs (81) and is also viewed as the leader in the most runs scored. Adding to the Yankees’ list of accomplished hitters is Brett Gardner, known for his unwavering loyalty to the Yankees, with whom he spent all his 14 MLB seasons. His contribution to the Yankees’ 2009 World Series victory cannot be overstated. During his commendable career, he scored 274 stolen bases, solidifying his place in the Yankees’ history. Tragically, Gardner recently faced a personal loss when his 14-year-old son passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning during a holiday.

Willie Randolph, another skilled hitter in the MLB, had a career spanning over 18 years from 1975 to 1992. Randolph was a part of the Yankees during the teams’ victorious 1977 and 1978 World Series. Although his MLB journey included playing for different teams, his contribution to the Yankees was the most significant. Managing to score 251 stolen bases during his time with the Yankees, he proved his worth. Randolph’s performance led to him being a six-time All-Star, with the AL All-Star in 1980, and NL All-Star in 1989. He was also the proud recipient of the Silver Slugger Award in 1977.

After retiring, Randolph continued his association with the Yankees by joining their executive team and tactfully managed the team for several years. His leadership skills were further demonstrated as he guided the Brewers and the Orioles. Lastly, the list of accomplished Yankee hitters would be incomplete without the mention of Hal Chase. Chase was part of the New York Yankees which was then referred to as the New York Highlanders, from 1905 to 1913. His versatility was evident as he excelled in both fielding and hitting. While with the Highlanders, he led the team in several statistics including RBIs, batting averages, and stolen bases, managing to claim 248 bases.

Unfortunately, Chase’s promising career was tainted with allegations of game-fixing, and his fondness for gambling led to his total ban from baseball activities. Despite the controversies, his skills and capabilities were admired by even the likes of legendary players like Babe Ruth and Walter Johnson, who lauded Chase as the best 1B ever.
