Firearms Incident Following Traffic Stop Inflames North Little Rock Community

An investigation is underway at the North Little Rock Police Department following an incident involving gunfire exchange between an officer and a passenger from a vehicle pulled over during a routine traffic stop. This unexpected occurrence left one person injured and the local community sensationally alarmed.

The incident developed at approximately 6:45 a.m. on a Wednesday, nearby the parking lot of Cactus Jack’s restaurant, situated on East McCain Boulevard in North Little Rock. An officer had intercepted a vehicle for a standard traffic stop when, without warning, a passenger exited the vehicle and began running.

This individual was later recognized as Jacob Goff-Stanick, aged 37. In response to his sudden flight, a pursuit ensued culminating in a confrontation in a breezeway. According to department reports, it was in this location that Goff-Stanick initiated a gunfire exchange with the pursuing officer.

During the heat of the confrontation, the officer successfully retaliated, injuring Goff-Stanick in the abdomen area with a gunshot. Thankfully, it appears the injuries are not of a life-threatening nature. Goff-Stanick was promptly transported to a nearby healthcare facility for medical assistance.

Upon searching Goff-Stanick, officers discovered four plastic packets suspected to contain methamphetamine and a packet of fentanyl, along with two digital weighing scales. In contrast, the driver of the vehicle was released without charges against them.

Goff-Stanick has since faced serious charges including the attempted capital murder, fleeing from law enforcement officers, intending to distribute methamphetamine, controlled substance trafficking, possession of a firearm by a felon, and simultaneous possession. The event did not result in any injured officers.

Local citizens, including local businesses and commuters, reported a chaotic and turbulent atmosphere during their typical morning routines. Major roadways were closed and the vicinity was filled with commotion surrounding the incident, making it an unforgettable morning for many.

Mark Poe, who manages a nearby Jimmy John’s restaurant anecdoted that the event rapidly evolved right before his eyes, taking place beyond his restaurant’s window. Similarly, Connie Tindall, a local commuter has mentioned being stuck in traffic due to the situation causing major disruptions.

This incident has led to the rekindled local community fears regarding the potential dangers and rapid escalation of ostensibly ‘routine’ traffic stops. Such incidents bring into question the certain unpredictability that these commonplace procedures can often inherently possess.

Lt. Colonel Jason Aaron of the Arkansas State Police addressed the issue, explaining that traffic stops, despite their risks, remain an essential instrument in law enforcement. They have often been fundamental in the uncovering of severe criminal activities.

It has also been noted that instances of foot pursuits initiated after vehicle stops are on a growing trend. This has led to recent efforts by Arkansas law makers to increase the penal consequences for individuals who attempt to evade law enforcement by fleeing from moving vehicles on foot.

The North Little Rock Police Department is persistent in its investigations to gather further facts related to this incident. As part of their commitment to public safety and transparency, they will continue to keep the public updated as new information comes to surface.

As they forge on with their work, the North Little Rock Police Department embodies the highest levels of public duty and safety, showcasing the complexity and challenges that law enforcement regularly face on the streets of North Little Rock.
