National Waffle Day Falls on a Bustling Sunday Amid New School Term Preparations
Step into this beautiful Sunday, known as a restful day especially amongst non-Jewish individuals. Today’s the 24th of August, 2025 and everywhere there’s a hustle and bustle of preparations for the new school term. Additionally, it’s a day dedicated to the delightful mix of sweet and savory, National Waffle Day, a cuisine that can be paired even with chicken, though I’ve yet to give that a shot. Picturing waffles served with a scoop of ice cream gets your mouth watering, a simple yet delectable dish with a history that traces back to the 14th century.
Coincidentally, August 24th also marks other celebrations such as National Peach Pie Day and Vesuvius Day, the latter being associated with the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. While the exact date of this geological event is uncertain, August 24th is commonly referenced. Lastly, it’s also Shooting Star Day, making it a day filled with significance and celebration.
We turn our attention now towards a compelling immigration case involving Kilmar Armando Ábrego García, who hailed from El Salvador but sought sanctuary in the United States. Despite his illegal status, a judge deemed it necessary to grant him protection due to fears of his potential exposure to gang violence should he return to his homeland. Consequently, he was permitted to remain in the U.S., earning his keep legally. He had a record clear of any misdemeanors and was dutifully abiding by all legal obligations.
However, despite his compliance, he was unjustly detained without a fair trial and inexplicably deported to the dreaded Salvadoran Terrorism Confinement Center. Accusations of being an affiliate of the notorious MS-13 terrorist network, and of facilitating the illegal trafficking of humans were laid against him. A plea deal was extended, which proposed his deportation to Costa Rica, contingent on his guilty plea and completion of his sentence. Unwilling to accept false charges, he rejected the proposition which then led the officials to consider his deportation to Uganda.
Authorities had planned to deport him to Uganda, after Ábrego García refused an offer to voluntarily go to Costa Rica in lieu of acknowledging guilt to human trafficking charges. These details emerged in the filings of the court proceedings held on a Saturday. The immigration case of Ábrego García had garnered national attention as it notably contradicted the immigration policies put forth by President Donald Trump.
In March, Ábrego García was mistakenly sent back to El Salvador, despite a judge’s earlier verdict which recognised his vulnerable position given the risk of violent confrontations in his home country. The retaliation to this error resulted in the administration under President Trump repatriating him to the U.S in June, only to be apprehended again on the aforementioned charges. As it stands, Ábrego García is no longer incarcerated, pending trial, having turned down another proposal for deportation.
Simultaneously, within the political sphere, there are indications that President Donald Trump is taking a step back from his efforts towards a Ukrainian peace treaty. Increasing casualties and the stagnant progress towards a resolution have contributed to his frustrations. Once expressing confidence in his abilities to swiftly pacify the situation, Trump is now expressing doubts regarding his potential to facilitate even a cordial dialogue amongst the leaders.
As of now, in President Trump’s statements, he will allow Putin sufficient time to decide whether he will acquiesce to President Trump’s request for a meeting with Zelensky. This marks a shift in tone and reveals his contingency plan amidst the ongoing Ukrainian conflict. The changes in the political climate continue to unravel each day.
Major political shifts are also being observed in California, where efforts are underway to counterbalance the gerrymandering favoring Republicans in Texas with a Democratic counterpart. The Wall Street Journal reports that the political repercussions from Texas’s party-inclined boundaries are being felt across the nation, and not always to the benefit of the Democratic party.
Gov. Gavin Newsom from California has put his weight behind a bill that proposes alterations to the state’s electoral maps to incorporate more Democratic seats. The state legislature has approved this bill, and Newsom validated it by his signature on Thursday. However, this move has raised the hackles of Republicans residing in Democratic-leaning states, who fear this might jeopardize their positions.

A high school football team in Minnesota is going through an unexpected change in their schedule due to a pair of osprey, who decided to set up their nest in a stadium floodlight. This has presented a peculiar problem, as turning the lights off might lead to the eggs and the baby birds overheating and being cooked alive.
There’s also a risk of a fire starting up if the floodlights were to be switched on, a hazard to both the birds and the surroundings. As a precaution and to closely monitor the situation, the school is collaborating with the state’s Department of Natural Resources. They’re utilizing a drone to keep tabs on the chicks twice every week.
Once the young birds are mature enough to spread their wings and fly off on their own, the nest can be safely cleared out and the long-standing tradition of the vibrant Friday Night Lights can be reintroduced. The intersection of nature and technology is providing a fascinating quandary to navigate.
In the meanwhile, there’s a familiar situation unfolding in Dobrzyn. The ever-persistent Hili is once again cunningly lobbying for food. The dialogue goes something like this: Hili enquires, ‘Are you heading to the shop?’ To which the response is, ‘Yes’. Without missing a beat, Hili proposes, ‘Get salmon, we’ll share it fifty-fifty.’
The dynamic between human chatter and the relentless drive of an animal for food always provides an amusing perspective. As the world turns and the stories it tells, each occurrence, big or small, unexpected or routine, adds a page to the ever-evolving narrative of life.
