Jackson Powers-Johnson Secures Right Guard Spot for Raiders
Head Coach Pete Carroll of the Las Vegas Raiders recently affirmed the speculation about their selection for the Week 1 start at the right guard position. Without any further doubts, the honor will go to second-round pick from 2024, Jackson Powers-Johnson. This selection came to surface after a contentious selection process in which JPJ faced stiff competition from experienced NFL player, Alex Cappa.
The contention between JPJ and Cappa for the right guard position during the offseason was an intriguing turn of events that caught many by surprise. Upon completion of the 2024 football season, it was expected that Jackson Powers-Johnson, owing to his commendable performance during his rookie year, could potentially be a starting center for the Raiders.
Previously in his career, Powers-Johnson had displayed significant proficiency in the center position. Insightfully, his collegiate career had also marked his experience in the same role. Hence, it was foreseen that he would make a permanent shift to the center position by 2025.
Contrary to these predictions, the Las Vegas team management gave their newer recruit, Jordan Meredith, the opportunity to prove his worth for the center position during the practice sessions. Admirably, Meredith stepped up to the challenge and effortlessly secured the position for the upcoming season. This unexpected development left JPJ to fight for the right guard spot against Cappa.
With Jackson Powers-Johnson now confirmed on the right guard position, the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive line up for the start of the season is determined. The team consists of some of the most formidable players, with Kolton Miller at the left tackle position and Dylan Parham assigned as the left guard.
The center position, which was once speculated to be the destined spot for JPJ, is now owned by Jordan Meredith. The right guard position, after a series of considerations, has now been secured by JPJ, leaving DJ Glaze to cover the duties of the right tackle.
This lineup certainly features some surprises, none bigger than the inclusion of Jordan Meredith as the starting center. While his potential for a starting role at guard was known, his ability to secure the central spot, and that too at an early stage, was fairly unexpected.
The decision regarding JPJ’s role was another point of astonishment. Initially, he was viewed as the undeniable choice for a starter position. However, the course of events put him in a position where he had to prove his worth, and battle for the spot.
