Dr. Cornel West’s Failed Attempt at Presidency: A Tale of Leftist Disordering

Dr. Cornel West is a well-recognized figure who often shares his thoughts on current socio-political happenings in America and delves into philosophical and theological musings. Interestingly enough, he launched a third-party presidential campaign in 2024, which didn’t quite hit the mark. His attempt at the presidency proved to be a contentious move, upsetting certain individuals who perceived the electoral race as a fragile endeavor which could be potentially disrupted by the slightest ruffling of leftist feathers.

Rev. Sekou’s association with West dates back nearly 30 years when the former was still an academic apprentice. West’s immediate impressions of Rev. Sekou were immensely favorable – a ‘special brother’ in his words. Rev. Sekou, now a pastor and musician, is part of the progressive Valley & Mountain Fellowship, a base in Columbia City.

The two of them are slated to engage in a panel discussion named ‘Faith in the Time of Monsters,’ held at Town Hall Seattle. The event aims at dissecting Christian nationalism and exploring the authoritative role faith leaders can play in its circumvention. It’s worth noting that this panel discussion has been whittled down for clarity.

One of the topics broached during the discussion is the escalating trend of fascism. This is typically characterized by the ominous control of large-scale militaries, an element quite visible in the rapidly exacerbating state of fascism in the country. The process gets an impetus from a rather unsettling ally – white Christian nationalism.

When dissecting the seamy interplay of Christian nationalism and Christian supremacy in contemporary administrative ethos, a trio of major figures comes to light. First, we have Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, an emblem of hyper-reformed Calvinist Reconstructionism. The presence of Paula White-Cain, the head of the White House Faith Office, adds another interesting dynamic.

White-Cain represents the swoop of supernaturalist, apostolic, prophetic, charismatic Christianity that made its presence felt in Seattle over the summer. These ideologies, individually quite unique, have bonded to decrease societal secularity and employ religion as an overriding controlling mechanism, facilitating authoritarian policies and a shift toward fascist rule.

The threat posed by Christian nationalism appears quite pronounced. However, the alarming trend seems to evade the perceptive gaze of the secular world, whether journalism or politics. The indifference persists despite glaring historical lessons and forewarnings that should raise concerns.

Why this oversight, you might ponder? Perhaps the root lies in the siloed existence of secular America. It creates and navigates its ecosystem replete with its specific network and hierarchy. Consequently, the secular worldview tends to cast a condescending eye on the religious population, eliminating any interest toward understanding the latter’s reality.

Now, none of this suggests that the left will morph into a formidable organizational force overnight. The transformation isn’t an instant process, but rather a more gradual progression built over time. Part of the journey involves grappling with the life and afterlife of such traditions.

While they might ambulate with noticeable style and grace, no one should live in denial of the struggle it entails. Acknowledging the harsh reality is crucial, as it imparts a clear understanding of how dire and desolate things can become. Given these circumstances, forging a path forward can indeed be profoundly challenging.
