Drunk Man Accused of Killing Teen Girl with His SUV in Tragic Event

A man, with his judgment impaired by alcohol, stands accused of running over a 16-year-old girl named Jhoanny Alvarez in Queens, after she and her family rebuffed his inappropriate advances. After the tragic event unfolded, the man in question purportedly inquired from the police, ‘Did I kill her?’

He was found at the wheel with a revoked license, allegedly piloting his 2009 Chevy Suburban onto the sidewalk where Jhoanny was walking, subsequent to a heated exchange with the young girl, her boyfriend, along with her mother and stepfather located outside an eatery in Elmhurst.

The evening had seen Alvarez and her family depart the restaurant subsequent to enjoying a family gathering. It was then that the yet-to-be-named male, accompanied by several other men, initiated a disturbing interaction which involved her and her mother, prosecutors claim.

The inappropriate remarks made by the man led to a confrontation involving Alvarez’s stepfather. Unfortunately, this altercation escalated, as narrated by the prosecutors. Once the incident was contained by onlookers, the purported culprit ascended his vehicle and drove off at speed on Roosevelt Avenue.

The aftermath of this gruesome incident saw him question the police, ‘Did I kill her?’ Officials accused him of deliberately motoring onto a one-way street going the wrong way, then mounting the sidewalk and circumventing a pole before striking his victims.

Young Alvarez didn’t stand a chance as the high speed vehicle took an off-road detour. The man claimed three victims among his four targets, sadly leaving Alvarez, a high school student, fatally wounded.

He then apparently steered the vehicle in reverse defying the indicated direction, thereby hitting a vacated van. Subsequent to the disastrous chain of events, he deserted his SUV and absconded from thelocation.

Local law enforcement later intercepted him, where he resolved to tell them his side of the story, asserting he had been on the receiving end of an assault. Upon revisiting the scene together with the police, he admitted to crashing into the pole and confessed to driving without a legitimate license.

Testing showed an alarming alcohol concentration in his bloodstream. A shocking 0.137 blood alcohol content (BAC) was recorded – a figure close to double of the legal limit – and this was a whole four hours after schedule of the tragic collision.

Once the authorities were done drawing their conclusions surrounding the harrowing events, a slew of charges were filed against him. These included second-degree murder, attempted murder tallying up to three counts, a couple of second-degree assault cases as well as vehicular manslaughter and charges relating to allegations he was driving under the influence.

The horrific details released in an official statement suggested that the man had pinned the young girl against a pole with his SUV, also causing harm to her mother and stepfather in the process. Described as wielding his 3-ton vehicle like a weapon, he’s facing charges pertaining to murder among other serious offences, and justice for Alvarez and her relatives is being vigorously pursued.

Aside from the mental trauma, Alvarez’s mother also suffered injuries to her leg and had to be admitted for treatment at a local hospital. The accused’s rap sheet unveiled a prior charge for driving while intoxicated, based on court documents. Unfortunately, this incident led to the suspension of his license.

Adding to his litany of offenses, court records showed that six months after his license had been suspended, he was pulled over for exceeding the speed limit while still driving under suspension.

Despite his troubled driving record, he was later granted a conditional license, an update provided by prosecutors in court. The accused was awaiting hearings for the two aforementioned cases scheduled for the following month.

He was ultimately ordered to be held without bail, and his conditional license was again suspended. The severity of his alleged crimes, if proven, could lead to a sentence of 25 years to life imprisonment.

The continuation of this gripping case is to be staged in court soon. The next appearance is tentatively set for September 19.
