Shooting At Kentucky State University Leaves One Dead
A deadly shooting rocked Kentucky State University Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and another critically injured. The incident unfolded around 3:35 p.m. at Young Hall, a dormitory on campus, according to Frankfort police.
Authorities confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody, but the individual’s name has not yet been released publicly. The school, a historically black university, remains on lockdown as law enforcement continues its investigation.
“We will share more information as available,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear posted on X. “Law enforcement are on scene, and a suspect has been arrested. Let’s pray for all those affected.”
A university spokesperson told local outlets that several people may have been injured during the attack. A press conference is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. local time for further updates.
The violence comes just two weeks after a separate national tragedy, when an Afghan migrant opened fire on two National Guard soldiers in Washington, D.C., killing 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom. The Trump administration deployed the Guard to help manage federal facilities amid surging unrest.
It also follows a disturbing pattern of violence targeting historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In October, a shooting near Howard University left five injured, and a separate attack at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University killed one and wounded six during homecoming weekend.
Kentucky State University, located in Frankfort, has more than 2,200 students and about 450 faculty and staff. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
