Assailant of Elwood Officer Facing Additional Charges for Miami Correctional Facility Attack
The individual reported to have fatally assaulted an Elwood law enforcement officer, identified as Carl Boards II, is facing charges for allegedly attacking a corrections officer in Miami Correctional Facility on the 25th of April. The charges set forth against Boards not only include attempted homicide but also extend to the possession of a lethal weapon while under detention and possession of methamphetamine. According to several legal documents, on the said date in April, Boards is purported to have ambushed a guard with multiple puncture wounds.
These court files disclose that Boards, armed with a self-made weapon – a sharply honed metal object, emerged from his cell intending harm to the guard. The corrections officer was inflicted with numerous stab injuries but, with remarkable quick thinking, escaped Board’s clutches supported by fellow staffers and managed to disarm him
Further inquiries made into the living quarters of Boards unearthed methamphetamine and other illegal items. Prior to the assault, he had reportedly exhibited signs of abnormal behavior. Boards, in addition to this horrendous act, is also contending with serious accusations connected to the homicide of Officer Noah Shahnavaz, who lost his life on-field during a vehicle stoppage in July 2022.
Details from the incident reveal that the tragic event unfolded around 2 a.m., when Lightfoot had halted a white Buick LaCrosse for inspection. Through cross-identification, it was later determined that the vehicle was operated by none other than Boards himself. While Shahnavaz was executing his due diligence near the crossroads of State Road 37 and County Road 1100N located in Madison County, he had radioed his colleagues warning about a possible armed situation involving the driver.
Unfortunately, it would turn out to be Shahnavaz’s last known communication. By the time reinforcements from the police department appeared on the scene, Shahnavaz was located within his patrol vehicle which had its warning lights still operating. In what can only be termed as a heart-wrenching incident, he had been shot multiple times.
Emergency medical services rushed to the aid of Shahnavaz, but notwithstanding their immediate response, Shahnavaz succumbed to his injuries. Postmortem reports from Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis revealed he had been marked by two bullet wounds to the cranium in addition to more wounds throughout his body.
After the fatal encounter, Boards initiated an attempt to escape from law enforcement officers, leading them on a chase. However, the pursuit was terminated when law enforcement employed tire deflation devices, causing his vehicle to become unmovable. Carl Boards II was subsequently apprehended without any further chaos being ensued.
Upon detaining Boards, law enforcement officials discovered he was in possession of a 9mm handgun and a black rifle equipped with an expanded ammunition magazine. These items were found within his motor vehicle. Following this incident, Boards now stands on trial against an array of 11 charges, which prominently includes a charge of first-degree murder.
Given the severity of the crimes he committed, Boards could potentially be handed down the capital punishment upon conviction. The initial hearing for Boards in the case of the assault carried out on the prison officer has been scheduled for the 7th of October.
