Donald Trump, despite his consistent adulation for his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, initially had a different candidate in mind for the role, as per recent reports. Trump, when exploring his options for the individual who would control the narrative of the James S. Brady briefing room, had, surprisingly, the controversial MAGA advocate Laura Loomer at the top of his list. Yet, a number of Trump’s advisors were less than enthusiastic about entrusting the responsibility to a conservative influencer known for stirring the pot with her contentious conspiracy theories. This internal pushback from his advisors was enough to sway Trump’s decision, leading to the ultimate announcement of Leavitt taking over the essential role after the election.

While Laura Loomer was not chosen for the press secretary position, she offered significant influence behind the scenes, contributing to the temperament of Trump’s presidential campaign. On September 10, Trump invited Loomer aboard his plane, taking her along to Philadelphia for his sole debate against Kamala Harris. Interestingly, Harris found herself as the Democratic nominee substitution for a seemingly faltering Joe Biden.

During the flight to Philadelphia, Loomer provided Trump with circulating online rumors concerning thousands of Haitian immigrants who were relocated to the Ohio town of Springfield. The allegations were fairly controversial, accusing the immigrants of poaching geese and cats for sustenance. Then recently announced Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, stepped into the fray and amplified some of these contentious allegations.

However, Kamala Harris, Biden’s backup and substitute presidential nominee, seemed prepared and eager to confront these baseless rumors during the debate. Despite this stance, the debate itself, while closely contested, ended in Trump’s favor, squarely leaving Harris on the back foot.

Ironically, while most political analysts were keen to paint the debate as a victory for Harris, it ultimately led to Trump securing the overall electoral win. Harris’ shot at the presidency, it seemed, was only afforded to her because of Biden’s apparent lack of ability to fulfill his nomination duties.

Harris’ ascension to the role of presidential nominee demonstrated an inherent weakness in the Democratic party’s leadership. However, Harris seemed all too ready to confront these allegations head-on during the debate, displaying a potentially dangerous level of acceptability to faceless, baseless accusations. It raises questions about her ability to distinguish between what is substantial and what is inconsequential, a key attribute of a promising leader.

As the dust settled post the debate, the Democratic duo of Biden and Harris emerged with a worldview drastically different from the majority of Americans, who ensured Trump’s victory. Their inability to connect with the concerns of average American citizens played a significant role in this election result.

Despite this, it is noteworthy that skilled communicators like Leavitt serve an essential function in shaping the narrative of political leadership. Through her words and actions, Leavitt lends a touch of credibility to the president in an era of politics rife with chaos and anxiety.
