Brazil holds a prestigious history in the UFC, consistently producing stand-out fighters who invariably leave a significant impression on the sport. Comparable to Dagestan, Brazil bears a lineage of renowned UFC fighters. Figures like Charles Oliveira and Alex Pereira have etched their names into the annals of UFC. Oliveira’s legacy in the lightweight division is irrefutable, while Pereira is celebrated for his accomplishments in the light heavyweight division.
Regrettably, this remarkable streak of success seems to be ebbing. The present year has brought a series of losses for multiple Brazilian UFC gladiators. In some cases, the defeat has been suffered by some of the eminent names in the Brazilian fighting community. Alex Pereira, once an invincible force, commenced this melancholic series.
Alex Pereira had presented himself as an undefeatable force in the previous year, stepping into the octagon multiple times to preserve his championship title. The fighter known as ‘Poatan’ cemented his reputation as a fighting colossus. However, the beginning of 2025 spelled disaster as Pereira was bested by the formidable Magomed Ankalaev.
The succession of the fallen continued with Renato Moicano. Moicano stood in the limelight, possessing the highly sought-after title shot against esteemed fighter Islam Makhachev. The absence of Arman Tsarukyan presented an opportune moment for Moicano, an alley for him to potentially secure the lightweight championship. Regrettably, the slate was wrung clean as Makhachev executed a skillful submission triumph against Moicano.
Charles Oliveira’s downfall added another weight to Brazil’s sinking ship. The living legend found himself on the canvas early in the first round, after meeting the whirlwind force that is Ilia Topuria. A once-celebrated icon of Brazilian fighters, Oliveira, unfortunately, was downed in an impressively fast bout.
Adding to the list of fallen stars is Gilbert Burns, once hailed as a rising marvel. Regrettably, the current state of affairs hasn’t been kind to Burns. A noteworthy talent, Burns seems to have suffered through a challenging phase. He currently endures the burdensome record of a four-bout losing streak, with the most recent misfortune unfolding in May 2025, against Michael Morales.
Diego Lopes is another Brazilian strongman that succumbed to the opposition. Having previously garnered tremendous attention due to his powerful performances, Lopes had quickly lined himself up as a solid contender for the featherweight championship. Unfortunately, Lopes experienced an overwhelming defeat battling against Alexander Volkanovski. At present, Lopes is in the recovery phase, striving to get back his rhythm.
Several more notable Brazilian fighters, such as Carlos Prates and Deiveson Figueiredo, saw their dreams of glorious victory turn into ash in 2025, adding to the list of misfortune for the Brazilian UFC community. But it’s important to remember that one’s performance in a single year doesn’t define the entirety of a fighter’s career.
Despite these unfortunate mishaps, it’s yet to be determined whether these established and skilled fighters can once again rise to prominence. However, one thing remains unequivocal; each of their dedication to the sport and their gritty determination to bounce back. Their love for the sport and their determination is something that an unfortunate season or year cannot erase.
