Actress Candace Cameron Bure revealed on her podcast Tuesday that her marriage to former NHL star Valeri Bure nearly fell apart during the pandemic—until an unexpected intervention from their children helped turn things around.
“Val and I went through a really, really rough season in our marriage in 2020, and that’s when the pandemic hit,” the Full House star said. “It was going south quickly. And we were like, ‘I don’t think we’re gonna make it through.’”
Bure, who married Valeri in 1996, said the most powerful push to reconcile came from their son Lev, who was in his early 20s at the time.
“At one point, Lev, Maks, and Natasha—but Lev was the one leading the charge—came to us and said, ‘We’d like to talk to you guys,’” she recalled. “Val and I sat down and Lev preached, like, a 45-minute sermon on marriage to us. Just had his Bible open on the couch and talked about it.”
Despite having no firsthand experience with marriage, Lev told his parents, “I don’t need to be married to know what the Word of God says.” Bure said he spoke with a calmness and maturity that struck both her and her husband.
“He looked us straight in the eye and individually asked, ‘Have you done everything you can? Is there one step of grace, one more act of kindness you could give to reconcile?’” she recalled. “It was a pivotal moment for us.”
The actress said that while there was much more to the story, it was that heartfelt, Scripture-based appeal from their children—especially Lev—that helped them find common ground.
“When we walked away from that, Val and I looked at each other and said, ‘Wow, we raised some pretty good kids,’” Bure said. “I’m so grateful to Lev, Maks, and Natasha. They were so supportive.”
Now celebrating nearly 30 years of marriage, Bure credits her children’s faith and courage with helping save her relationship—and giving her and Valeri a renewed sense of grace and commitment.
