Captured in Romania: ‘The Fly’, Infamous French Prison Escapee

The infamous French criminal responsible for a deadly prison breakout in the previous year was seen in a Romanian courtroom during the weekend. This followed a nearly year-long pursuit by international law enforcement agencies, ending with Mohamed Amra’s capture in Romania’s capital, Bucharest.

Amra, whose hair had been colored red, perhaps as a means of disguising his identity, flashed a broad grin to spectators in the courtroom as he was led into, and later out of, the building by police authorities.

In addition to Amra, an additional ten persons thought to be part of Amra’s group were detained. These individuals are accused of aiding in Amra’s dramatic jailbreak in the previous year and subsequently providing assistance while he was evading capture.

The prison escape carried out by Amra and his accomplices was a violent affair. Two prison guards lost their lives during the escape, which occurred as a prison convoy was transporting Amra through Normandy back in May.

Following his escape, an arrest warrant was internationally distributed by Interpol, the intergovernmental organization that facilitates worldwide police cooperation and crime control.

After identifying Amra as the perpetrator and suspecting that he had left the country, French investigators communicated with their colleagues in various other nations. Amra was eventually recognized and detained by Romanian law enforcement near a bustling shopping area on a recent Saturday.

The final decision on whether to extradite Amra back to France is in the hands of Romanian judicial authorities, who will address the matter accordingly.

Despite the red hued hair intended to serve as a disguise, it was biometric methods that confirmed the individual was in fact Amra. Techniques such as facial recognition and fingerprint analysis were used to verify his identity.

Amra, who had been dubbed ‘The Fly’ due to his knack for evading the law, had initially escaped after receiving a sentence for charges of burglary stemming from an incident in the Normandy-based town of Evreux.

Yet, burglary was not the only crime pinned to his name. He was concurrently under investigation for his suspected involvement in an attempt at a planned homicide and a separate, lethal kidnapping incident.

According to the statement from the Paris prosecutor handling his case, Amra appears to have significant ties with the underworld in the city of Marseille.

Presumably, he is suspected of playing a pivotal role in leading an organization heavily involved with trafficking illicit drugs, strengthening his image as a formidable figure in the criminal underworld.
