Detroit Lions to Make Seven Selections in 2025 NFL Draft
The Detroit Lions are now set to make seven selections in the forthcoming 2025 NFL draft, owing to updates in league regulations. The recent hiring of Aaron Glenn as the head coach of the New York Jets on January 22 resulted in a compensatory third-round pick for the Lions. This bonus is made possible by the modifications to the NFL’s Rooney Rule implemented in 2020.
According to these amendments, any team that loses a minority assistant to a head coaching position in a different franchise is rewarded with two compensatory draft picks. These picks follow all the other compensatory selections and are given over two consecutive years. For Aaron Glenn’s indispensable contributions as the defensive coordinator from 2021 till 2024, the Lions are to be awarded extra third-round picks in the upcoming two drafts.
The precise order of these picks will be declared later in the spring. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions are preparing for their draft picks in 2025. The event, set to span over three days, will take place in Green Bay, Wisconsin, from April 24 to 26.
As it currently stands, the Lions will make the 28th selection in each round of the 2025 NFL draft. The following gives an overview of the seven picks that they possess: No. 28 overall in the first round, No. 60 overall in the second round, and a projected No. 101 overall in the third round.
In addition, the specific order of their fourth-round pick has yet to be determined. Moreover, the Lions also have a sixth and seventh-round pick courtesy of previous trades with the Buccaneers and Cowboys respectively.
The sixth-round pick, whose exact order is pending, is a result of the acquired Carlton Davis III from the Buccaneers. The seventh-round pick, also yet to be determined, comes from a 2024 trade-off initiated for Terrion Arnold with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Lions also have another seventh-round pick, the order of which hasn’t been decided. This concludes the original seven picks to be made by the Detroit Lions in the 2025 NFL draft. The compensatory pick from Aaron Glenn’s appointment as the Jets head coach also contributes to these picks.
