Disney Pulls the Plug on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ After Controversial Remarks
Disney’s top brass, in a surprising twist, decided to put the famed Jimmy Kimmel’s show on hiatus following his remarks on a sensitive political issue. Kimmel, during one of his monologue sessions, articulated an unsubstantiated assertion about the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. This claim, which pegged the alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, as a supporter of conservative ideologies, sparked a fury amongst the right-wing supporters. Kimmel went a step further to critique former President Donald Trump’s reaction towards Kirk’s demise, which was not well-received by many.
The controversial comments by Kimmel led to a pivotal decision by Disney CEO Bob Iger and Co-Chairwoman of Disney Entertainment, Dana Walden. The duo showed their concern about Kimmel’s intention to reinforce his statements in his next monologue. As per insiders, Kimmel was set to defend his remarks, asserting they were deliberately misconstrued by his right-leaning critics. They believed this follow-up might add fuel to the already raging fire and exacerbate the situation further.
Kimmel’s planned statement was not just limited to the general conservative mass, but was supposed to address the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair, Brendan Carr’s stern warning as well. Carr alarmed the ABC-affiliated networks with a possibility of revoking licenses owing to offensive remarks about Kirk’s assassination. Kimmel, on Monday, averred that conservatives were attempting to dissociate themselves from the assassin, Robinson.
He went on to equate Trump’s reaction to Kirk’s death, to the way a toddler reacts to the loss of their pet goldfish. Unsurprisingly, this comparison did not go down well with Trump supporters, which triggered Disney leadership’s concern. Disney leaders Iger and Walden feared that Kimmel defending his stance might stir up further animosity within the Make America Great Again (MAGA) followers.
In a bid to deescalate the increasing tension, Iger and Walden hoped for an acknowledgement and resolution from Kimmel. However, Kimmel seemed obstinate on his approach and maintained his plan to openly discuss the ongoing controversy. Following a conversation with Kimmel on Wednesday, Walden, along with other senior executives, launched discussions regarding the possible outcome and implications this could have.
Another factor necessitating Kimmel’s show’s indefinite suspension was the threatening emails that the show’s crew had been receiving. This potential security threat to the show’s staff weighed heavily in the decision made by Walden and Iger. As a result, they believed it was in the best interests of everyone involved to temporarily withdraw Kimmel’s show from their program lineup.
Before this decision by Disney, Nexstar Media Group had already declared their intention to put Kimmel’s show on hold. They wanted to wait for Disney’s response to the disrespectful comments made by Kimmel. The conglomerate wanted Disney to tackle the offensive remarks before continuing with the broadcasting of Kimmel’s show.
ABC, the prominent American network, followed suit shortly after and confirmed that they would be pulling the plug on Kimmel’s show for the time being. This was seen as a response to the outcry following Kimmel’s controversial monologue. Their decision resonated with Disney’s initial course of action: prioritizing peaceful resolution over fuelling the controversy.
The suspension of Kimmel’s show caused a wave of discontentment amongst stalwarts of liberal ideologies and Democratic congressmen. Many of them saw this as an affront to freedom of speech and believed it to be unjust. The decision drew criticism and outrage from several corners, painting ABC’s move as suppression of free speech.
Renowned Democratic California Rep. Eric Swalwell was one amongst many who expressed his dissent towards the show’s cancellation. In a symbolic display of support, he sported a ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ hat in an on-air segment. He went on to criticize Trump, stating that Trump had influenced the show’s cancellation because of his aversion to being disparaged.
