DOGE Discovers Hushed Political Favoritism in Nonprofits
Every twelve months, an astronomical sum of U.S. taxpayer money is channeled into organizations that essentially operate as arms of the Democratic Party. This means that roughly half of the American populace, those who ally with the Republican Party, inadvertently end up funding their political competitors. The issue extends far beyond what is initially apparent, and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is dedicated to shining a light on this system, which reeks of corruption.
Disturbing discoveries have been made by the DOGE that should leave every tax-paying citizen appalled. A staggering amount of money is being funneled into groups that are not typically classified non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or nonprofits as we usually understand them. Instead, these entities are virtually extensions of the government, hence better representing ‘BGOs’ or ‘basically government organizations.’
A case in point is the Solidarity Center, a group which has raked in more than $86 million in federal funds since 2008. Of this significant sum, $61 million was awarded while President Biden was in office. The organization, created by the unions, depends on taxpayers for nearly all (99%) of its funding while advancing the agenda of the AFL-CIO, a group that channeled 86% of its political contributions to Democrats in the 2024 election cycle.
The Solidarity Center does more than just support union-related causes. It also fervently advocates on behalf of radical ‘climate justice’ initiatives as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Soon after the DOGE suggested putting a stop to the group’s federal financial support, the Solidarity Center swiftly initiated legal proceedings against the Trump administration. This situation is not an exception but rather one of many comparable scenarios.
One such elaborate strategy involves federal agencies providing grants to educational districts, which then, in turn, hire Planned Parenthood to propagate the notion that the distinction of biological sex is a fallacy. This is the method through which the CDC indirectly subsidizes the gender ideology training offered by Planned Parenthood, all under the guise of HIV grants. This manipulation of funds under a charitable pretense essentially amounts to an ingenious form of money laundering.
The same pattern seems to play out time and again: tax dollars are utilized to financially bolster organizations that are pushing for a larger government, thereby aiding the election of politicians who ensure the consistent flow of money. The result is an endless self-feeding cycle of political favoritism.
As expected, leaders of these nonprofits, who are eager to continue receiving government funds, are resistant to any form of investigation by DOGE into their financial practices. However, nonprofits should not depend on government money as if it’s a lifeline. A considerable portion of federal funds is not channeled into smaller community-centric nonprofits, but rather it’s directed to large nonprofits which are reliant on the government, despite the latter often having a less significant impact on people’s lives.
Large NGOs, it appears, are much more efficient at lobbying for an expansive government agenda and launching legal proceedings. One co-worker discovered a group of 15 nonprofits that had all received federal funds and then proceeded to sue President Trump within his first 30 days in office. Their collective endowment from taxpayers? No less than $1.6 billion.
The Environmental Law Institute serves as a prime illustrative case of this idea of regulatory capture. Despite successfully securing awards from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Homeland Security Department, the institute manages a ‘Climate Judiciary Project.’ This project purports to enlighten federal and state judges about climate litigation, while in reality, these are the same judges who are assigned to cases specially designed to transfer billions from energy corporations into the hands of environmentalist organizations like the institute.
Perhaps what takes the cake is the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund to the tune of $27 billion, sneakily hidden within the Inflation Reduction Act. As an expert on government accountability puts it, this severe misuse of funds might just be the most egregious in American history.
The common response when such misappropriation is unveiled is, predictably, defensive. Typically, those who have been profiting from government funding tend to resort to emotional scare tactics. Even valid concerns about allegedly taxpayer-financed activism are misrepresented as attempts to deprive orphans of their meals. Criticisms towards radical nonprofits accepting grants are twisted into opposition towards potentially life-saving medical interventions.
These narratives pull at heartstrings and serve the sole purpose of deflecting attention from the proper oversight needed over the utilization of public tax funds. We should not be swayed by such tactics. It is indeed feasible to back worthwhile charitable work while simultaneously voicing opposition to the manipulation of tax dollars for partisan political operations associated with either political party.
It is time to acknowledge that our debt-laden federal government simply cannot afford to squander billions on political lobbying masquerading as philanthropy. Nonprofits that genuinely tend to the needs of the people are far more effective when they are directly accountable to donors that endorse their mission, rather than kowtowing to government oversight.
Hence, it is high time the faucet of this gravy train should be promptly shut off. The current practices of distributing federal funds contribute nothing to the welfare of the taxpayers and instead appear to increase favoritism and corruption within the government.
