G20 Summit 2026: Trump’s Doral Golf Club as the Venue
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has decided to hold the Group of 20 (G20) summit at his Doral golf club close to Miami in 2026. This is after he abstained from participating in the year’s event held in South Africa. According to him, the Doral location is ideally suited for the summit. Trump shared this information during an announcement in the Oval Office.
The G20 is a forum consisting of 19 countries, the African Union, and the European Union. They take turns hosting this event which primarily revolves around economic policy discussion. The schedule for the 2026 summit, however, remains undecided as of now.
Trump’s choice of venue is his very own Trump National Doral Miami, an event subsidized by US taxpayers. The summit is estimated to bring in a considerable amount of revenue from accommodation and food services. This decision is likely to revive discussions about him potentially benefiting monetarily from his position as President.
Nevertheless, the White House has emphatically refuted any implications of a conflict of interest arising from this scenario. The administration had previously retracted an idea to have Doral as the venue for the 2020 Group of 7 summit during Trump’s inaugural term.
This earlier proposition was met with criticism from members of both political parties and ethics experts who were concerned about it breaching the US Constitution. Since his assumption of office in January, Trump has consistently shrugged off ethical questions regarding the overlap of his business ventures and policy decisions.
The Doral site, apart from the golf course, boasts of numerous facilities such as a clubhouse, swimming pool, restaurants, and a spa. Also, it offers roughly 100,000 square feet of meeting space, incorporating the notable Donald J. Trump Grand Ballroom.
Ahead of Trump’s presidency, the State Department had, in January, invited proposals from American cities interested in hosting the G20 summit. The department’s anticipation was that these discussions would likely be scheduled somewhere in the first half of October 2026.
However, it remains ambiguous whether Miami or its neighbor, Doral, were among the cities that had sent in their proposals. Trump contemplates skipping the G20 summit in November of the current year due to a disagreement with South Africa, the host, over its stand on land policies and Israel.
Signatories of the G20 include daunting nations such as Russia and China. Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, is currently embroiled in a serious legal matter as he is facing a war-crime arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court.
The news regarding the venue for the G20 summit was publicly announced on September 6, 2025. The choice of venue is seen by some observers as a pragmatic use of available resources, but critics question the potential conflict of interest.
Although concerns about ethically questionable decisions persist, the 2026 summit proposal brings a fresh wave of debates about the extent of separation between the office of the president and his private businesses.
While the President’s rationale for the site selection might primarily be utility and suitability, the inevitable overlap with personal interests makes this move contentious. Especially considering the rejection of hosting proposals in the past.
In conclusion, the discussions around the conduct of the 2026 G20 summit at Trump’s Doral Golf Club could reignite debates about politicians benefiting from their official positions. However, the confirmation of such claims would require more in-depth study and consideration of multiple variables.
