Harris’s Hypocrisy Zooms at Met Gala Amid Gaza Crisis
In a bold manifestation of hypocrisy, the headlining event in New York City found itself subjected to scrutiny, largely due to its timing amid the escalating tensions in Gaza. Kamala Harris, who previously held the position of Vice President, is now caught in the whirlwind of reprimands after partaking in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s gala in New York City. Let’s not forget that this comes as the Democratic Party is grappling with a historic low in terms of public endorsement. The cause behind this is their unrelenting support for Israel’s actions against Gaza, especially during Biden’s reminiscence of a presidency.
Rather amusingly, the Democrats’ official Twitter handle circulated an image of Harris, all dolled up for the Met Gala. As expected, this act fuelled a wave of derision towards the already unpopular Democratic Party. Who can actually blame the masses when their approval rating is hitting rock bottom per CNN’s reports? Unfortunately, the majority finds it difficult to digest Harris’s attendance at this glamour-filled event, while simultaneously, the crisis in Gaza shows no signs of improvement due to Israel’s actions.
Many point fingers at the former vice president for her lack of initiative in promoting a ceasefire during her tenure. In a striking comparison that encapsulates the current state of affairs, one social media user likened the photo of Harris prancing about at the Met Gala to an image of former president Lyndon B Johnson who, unlike Harris, was seen amidst poverty-stricken Americans in Kentucky. The user rightfully jibed, ‘We’ve come a long way’, shedding light on the downhill journey of the Democratic party.
Furthermore, the former vice president was not the only one receiving flak; the event, in its entirety, was questioned for its repeated occurrence amid the escalating war in Gaza. As the death toll increases by thousands since last year, the population, exceeding two million, is left grappling with severe food shortage as Israel continues its obstruction of food and humanitarian aid. A saddening number of over 52,000 Palestinians have been heartlessly killed in Gaza since October 2023.
Suffice to say, the high-profile event did not sit well with those aware of the escalating crisis. ‘Within Our Lifetime’, a New York City-based entity, organized a demonstration outside the Metropolitan Museum, highlighting the human rights issues in Gaza. The tragic irony was pointed out, ‘While Celebrities continue to flaunt their extreme wealth and materialism, not a single food or aid truck has entered Gaza for two months, leading to mass starvation of the Palestinian people,’ as was posted by the organization.
In the wide web, social media users contrasted snapshots of ritzy celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Gigi Hadid with the images of those suffering in Gaza. The stark dichotomy was summed up brilliantly by a Palestinian social media user who sarcastically said ‘We are losing family and friends left and right. But yes please show us your favorite most wealthy celebrity wearing expensive clothes made by other wealthy people.’
People began questioning the Gala’s theme this year, which surrounded a revolutionary movement in Black American history, sighting it as a feeble attempt to dodge the barrage of criticism it encountered in 2024. The preceding year’s edition sparked a boycott campaign against celebrities who chose to attend but remained silent when it came to supporting Palestine. This year’s event saw a less widespread backlash, but the criticisms remained similar, with one person mercilessly dubbing it ‘selective humanity’.
At the heart of the matter lies the conflict in Gaza that erupted in October 2023 following the Hamas-led attacks against southern Israel. The outcome has been brutal, with more than 52,000 Palestinians having been killed and over 118,000 injured. Many are still missing, feared dead under the debris of their own homes. Yet, amidst all the horror and chaos, attention is diverted towards the celebration of wealth and extravagance in far-off New York City’s star-studded gala.
Despite the self-evident turmoil and suffering in Gaza, triggered by the escalated warfare due to Biden’s administration’s stance, the Democrats seem oblivious or conveniently ignorant. While the world watches in horror at the atrocities committed, they continue to participate in glitzy events, flaunting their wealth and privilege. One can’t help but wonder about the priorities of the leaders who opt to revel in revelry rather than address the dire situation at hand.
The Democratic Party’s record-low approval rating, in light of their continuous support for the aggressive incidents in Gaza, paints a clear picture about public sentiment. People in the United States and across the globe have started to recognize the futility in celebrating a spectacle like the Met Gala while there’s a humanitarian crisis escalating elsewhere. The Democrats’ participation in such events amidst international turmoil is seen, rightfully so, as mockery of the sufferings of others.
It’s also alarming to note how the theme of the Gala, centered around an influential movement in Black American history, was leveraged to avoid criticism. Could it be a mitigation strategy designed to eclipse the denunciation it had been subject to in the past? The fact remains that the righteous sentiments behind the theme have been overshadowed by the extravagant spectacle, further diluting the socio-political significance it could have otherwise carried.
So what we have in essence is a series of chaotic acts underscoring the Democrats’ bitter dance with diplomacy. Between the ex-Vice President attending a haut monde event as the world reels in crisis, a shaken Democratic Party struggling on its political crutches, and the stark ignorance towards the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, it seems the party’s stance is all about de-prioritizing important matters for vapid displays.
While Palestinians endure an unbearable reality with starvation and death, the Democratic Party and its members turn a blind eye, participating in ridiculously expensive events instead. This juxtaposition simply highlights the glaring differences between actual urgent crises and petty political games.
Despite widespread outrage and criticism, the Democratic Party, including figures like Kamala Harris, continues to maintain a stance that comes across as painfully detached from the realities of war and devastation. This only serves to further diminish their rapidly sinking approval ratings. The former Vice President’s willingness to find solace in the spotlight of the Met Gala, away from her duties, speaks volumes about her and the Democratic Party’s true concerns.
One cannot help but question the moral fabric that allows such lack of empathy and consideration for human suffering while attending exorbitant events, draped in luxury. The willingness to silently watch the death toll rise in Gaza and express support for the aggressors instigates further distaste towards such negligent leaders. As the world changes, one can only hope for leadership that prioritizes humanitarian conditions over cheap political gains and glamour-filled events.
