Three premier fast bowlers from India, namely Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Mohsin Khan, recently went under the knife and have been ruled out of the cricket field for the next six months. This news comes in the wake of IPL 2025, after which they underwent successful surgical procedures. Furthermore, all three of them are integral members of the Lucknow Super Giants, a team in the Indian Premier League.
Mayank Yadav, a fast bowler who is known to be susceptible to injuries, had to undergo a back surgery last month. This surgical procedure took place in Christchurch, New Zealand. His debut in the cricket world was commendable and left a significant impact, despite being just a year old. Unfortunately, his storyline this season was cut short as he only played two matches for the Lucknow Super Giants due to recurring back problems.
Despite his tender age of 23 and a career peppered with injuries, Mayank has represented India in three T20 International matches, with his first one being against Bangladesh in the previous year. Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan, two other prominent pacers of the team, had to go through knee surgeries. These operations were scheduled subsequently after their IPL matches.
Avesh Khan, who represents Madhya Pradesh in the domestic cricket scenario, has undergone surgery plausibly due to persistent issues with his right knee. The surgery was performed on June 17. On the other hand, Mohsin underwent ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery on his knee.
The recovery schedule for these three talented athletes means that they will unfortunately be missing the first half of the domestic cricket season for 2025-26. Particularly considering this, they are expected to make their comeback during the second string of Ranji Trophy matches scheduled for next year.
As part of their recovery and rehab process, these players will be reliant on the services provided by BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Specifically, Mohsin suffered from an ACL tear on the right knee. This unfortunate incident occurred on December 31 when he was participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Despite this setback, Mohsin decided to join the training camp of Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the 2025 IPL. Regrettably, his injuries from previous matches persisted, hence he had to step down. Shardul Thakur, a well-regarded all-rounder from India, was enlisted as his replacement.
The history of Avesh’s knee troubles can be dated back to the 2024-25 domestic cricket season when it caused him to miss out on the remaining league matches of the Ranji Trophy for Madhya Pradesh. As a testament to his skills, Avesh’s most recent representation for India was in an ODI match against South Africa in Paarl in December of the prior year.
Over his career, the 28-year-old fast bowler has showcased his cricketing prowess by claiming 36 wickets in 33 appearances in white-ball internationals, including 25 T20 Internationals & eight ODIs, representing India. But it’s not just pacemen from Lucknow Super Giants who are dealing with injuries. Other cricketers are also struggling with physical issues, which are interfering with their performances.
Rajat Patidar, the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for IPL 2025, is likely to be benched for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. An official statement revealed that the Madhya Pradesh batsman has been asked to resort to resting by the medical team of BCCI. Currently, he is recuperating from injuries in his hand and heel.
Recently, it has been noted that Rajat has been working on his fitness at Madhya Pradesh’s off-season camp, but he has refrained from partaking in any batting exercises since doctors have recommended him a period of rest. Unfortunately, these injuries mean that Patidar will be absent from the Duleeep Trophy.
It is nevertheless expected that his recovery will be on track in time for the Ranji Trophy. An inside source disclosed this information. The source also shared how Patidar’s injuries have affected his potential selections for representation.
The source noted that Patidar was ostensibly in consideration for the team touring England but had to miss out as he was still nursing the hand injury he acquired during RCB’s victorious season at IPL 2025. While IPL 2025 made headlines due to some scintillating performances and RCB’s victory, the period post the tournament has been marked with several players undergoing surgeries and facing weeks of recovery.
These untimely injuries and surgeries undoubtedly pose substantial challenges to both individual players and their respective teams. Still, they also serve as a stark reminder of the physical toll that high-level sports such as cricket can take on an athlete’s body.
Despite this setback, the spirit of cricket prevails, and everyone is eagerly awaiting the return of these remarkable athletes. With adequate recovery and rehabilitation, they are expected to come back stronger and continue to enthrall cricket fans around the globe.
Here’s hoping for a swift recovery for each of these athletes, and we look forward to witnessing them in action in future matches of the upcoming cricket seasons.
