Kamala Harris’ Puzzling Met Gala Appearance: A Misguided Attempt at Aesthetics?

In a puzzling move, former Vice President Kamala Harris made an unanticipated appearance at the 2025 Met Gala. Harris dragged her spouse Doug Emhoff along and sported a custom-made outfit from Off-White, topping off the ensemble with accessories from Irene Neuwirth. These included somewhat ostentatious emerald triple drop link earrings, an emerald and diamond three-stone ring, and a drop oval emerald double prong ring. Emhoff, in similar fashion-conscious spirit, dressed himself in a Brunello Cucinelli tuxedo.

One might argue that true dandyism signifies confidence and strength. However, Harris, praised as an icon of these qualities and as someone who has counteracted adversity, often raised eyebrows during her political career. Her appearance at the Met Gala in amidst of the Off-White community was another such instance.

This was her first foray into the Met Gala and her first standout appearance since stepping down from her official post in January. As someone who has always given much attention to artistic expression—whether dance, music, visual arts, or fashion—it is intriguing to see her silent move in the world of aesthetics.

Art does indeed shape the landscape of our society and politics. But it always raises the question, will aesthetic indulgence really help shape our present circumstances and path forward? Surely, it is harder to envision when looking at Harris’ wardrobe choices.

On another note, Harris recently resurfaced in the spotlight, giving a speech at the Emerge 20th Anniversary Gala in San Francisco. Her message was, as usual, filled with questionable optimism: things are likely to decline before they improve. But we are prepared for it. We will not disperse. We stand united.

Predictably, she used the platform to criticize President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, labeling his administration the opposite of upholding America’s greatest values. According to her, we are experiencing the complete renunciation of these ideals. Such rhetoric, however, seems to conveniently omit any acknowledgement of her own administration’s shortcomings.

Furthermore, she stated that the current economic predicament is the most severe man-made crisis in recent presidential history. Such remarks conveniently overlook a number of other significant economic downturns in history. Is it a fair assessment, or merely a veiled attempt at shifting blame?

In the wake of Harris’ appearance at the Met Gala, there is speculation about her next political move, which may even involve a gubernatorial run in California. If her past record is anything to go by, one may question whether she’s prepared for such a responsibility.

In perhaps a unanimous sentiment, Harris shared prior to her departure in January, ‘Everyone here has much to be proud about, and our work is not done.’ A sentiment that many took with a grain of salt, considering the track record of her administration.

She added, ‘As you all know me — because we have worked together for lengthy hours, several days, months, and years — it is not in my character to exit silently.’ A foretelling statement perhaps, hinting at more perplexing moves to come.
