Medical Drama ‘Pulse’ Tops This Week’s Netflix New Releases
Diving deep into the plethora of new releases on Netflix for the week, several stand-out titles catch my eye that should definitely be on everyone’s watchlist. First and foremost is the medical drama ‘Pulse.’ In the spotlight this week, this fresh take on medical narratives features Willa Fitzgerald, the star of ‘Reacher’ season 1, as an ER doctor stationed in Miami. It’s definitely a pick for devotees of ‘The Pitt’ or ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ shaping up to be the go-to binge of the week.
However, ‘Pulse’ isn’t the only anticipated debut this week. The third season of ‘Love on the Spectrum’ will be opening as well. This alternative approach to dating shows focuses on participants on the autism spectrum, offering a unique twist and a departure from the typical dating show narrative.
‘Pulse’ showcases Fitzgerald in the role of Dr. Danielle ‘Danny’ Simms, a third-year resident and applauded talent at the fictional Maguire Medical Center in Miami. After a scandal in her office romance results in the suspension of the emergency department’s Chief Resident, she unexpectedly finds herself thrust into leadership just as a hurricane threatens to hit the hospital.
Judging by the trailer, this series appears set to tackle melodrama head-on. You can start streaming this show commencing this Thursday on Netflix. On the other hand, ‘Love on the Spectrum’ distinguishes itself from conventional dating shows. It leans more towards ‘Queer Eye’ than ‘Love is Blind’ in its composition and narrative structure.
Within ‘Love on the Spectrum,’ you’ll find a group of hopeful and engaging individuals, all of whom are on the autism spectrum. Navigating the tricky waters of dating is challenging in itself, but balancing these romantic relationships with neurodivergence takes these challenges to a whole new level.
The third season of ‘Love on the Spectrum’ features a mix of familiar faces and newcomers. Guiding them through the treacherous tides of romance is neurodiversity expert and author Jennifer Cook, whose mission is to help these daters find the perfect partner.
‘Banger’ is another title that looks set to entertain viewers this week. This French action-comedy showcases Vincent Cassel portraying Scorpex, a has-been French DJ. While Scorpex isn’t at the top of his game anymore, his life takes a fascinating twist when he’s roped in by the police to expose a criminal gang linked to an adversarial DJ, Vestax (Mister V).
Amidst this dangerous venture, Scorpex sees a shot at reclaiming his past glory through the creation of a breakout hit song, aptly titled ‘banger.’ In a different vein, the series ‘Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer’ reveals a chilling narrative. Over the years in NYC and Long Island, young female sex workers started vanishing. Yet due to reasons unknown — their gender, profession, or something else entirely — their search doesn’t appear to be a top priority.
However, the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert instigated an intensive police search around Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach on Long Island. This search led to the horrifying discovery of multiple sets of human remains, four initially, followed by seven more in subsequent searches. In 2023, a suspect named Rex Huermann was apprehended and charged with numerous counts of murder.
One more title to watch out for is the adaptation of the legendary video game franchise, ‘Devil May Cry.’ This grandly successful series, which debuted in 2001, has sold millions of copies worldwide and bears a significant mark on video game history. The animation version coming to Netflix, created by ‘Castlevania’ maker Adi Shankar and produced by the revered Studio Mir, certainly holds great potential.
In the list of titles having a mixed go is John Mulaney’s ‘Everybody’s Live.’ The initial episode performed well, but the following two episodes didn’t quite match the allure of ‘Everbody’s in L.A.’ Netflix clearly made the right call making this a weekly release rather than a daily one, helping maintain the show’s momentum.
Currently, there’s still a chance for Mulaney to uplift the proceedings. Lastly, for those seeking some thrilling action, the 1995 classic ‘Heat’ hits Netflix this month. Boasting a star-studded ensemble cast including Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, and Tom Sizemore, the Michael Mann thriller is sure to captivate audiences.
In ‘Heat,’ Al Pacino brings to life LAPD Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, who is caught up in an intense hunt for professional thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and his criminal crew following a flawed robbery. Filled with suspense and tension, this heist movie is certainly a must-add to your Netflix watchlist this month.
