Mets Fire Almost Entire Coaching Staff in Major Overhaul Under Carlos Mendoza
The Mets are cleaning house after a disappointing season, keeping manager Carlos Mendoza in place but parting ways with nearly all of his coaching staff.
Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, hitting coaches Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes, bench coach John Gibbons, and third base coach Mike Sarbaugh are all out, according to team sources. The shake-up follows an 83–79 campaign that fell short of the playoffs.
Gibbons, who joined Mendoza’s staff last winter, told The Post he understood the decision. “It’s time for a new adventure, see where baseball takes me,” Gibbons said. “Time for a fresh face in that job. Mendy and [David] Stearns are the real deal and the team is in great hands.”
Chavez, meanwhile, thanked ownership and players in a farewell Instagram post: “Best owners in baseball … That group is super special and they worked their asses off. Be grateful in every situation. On to the next.”
Who’s Staying, Who’s Moving
First base and baserunning coach Antoan Richardson, strategy coach Danny Barnes, and assistant Rafael Fernandez are the only staff members confirmed to be staying. Assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel and bullpen coach José Rosado have been given permission to explore opportunities with other teams.
Catching instructor Glenn Sherlock had already announced his retirement earlier this week.
Next Steps
The Mets are expected to consider internal and external options to fill the vacancies, including J.P. Arencibia, who served as Mendoza’s bench coach at Triple-A Syracuse this past season.
The overhaul signals a fresh direction for the organization as it looks to bounce back from another frustrating year and reshape its identity around Mendoza heading into 2025.
