Musk in Hot Water for Buddha Comparison in Political Role

For nearly a hundred days, Elon Musk has held a significant role in the Trump administration as a top advisor and head of the whimsically termed ‘Department of Government Efficiency’, or DOGE. Since his political involvement began, the 53-year-old founder of Tesla has given a strong impression that he is determined to shake up the political structure of the country, sowing seeds of potential strife. Interestingly, Musk has recently drawn a comparison between himself and the Buddha, a statement which drew a storm of criticism. Kristen Kavanaugh, former leader of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at Tesla, has vocally disagreed with this comparison, stating that Musk embodies the antithesis of the religious figure.

Kavanaugh has outlined three key ways in which Musk directly counters the philosophy of the Buddha. This discussion took place after a meeting with Musk and several key DOGE representatives, where they had a dialogue with multiple established news reporters in the Roosevelt Room of the West Wing. In response to questions about his future plans for leading DOGE and his potential departure from the role, Musk enigmatically responded, ‘Does Buddhism need Buddha? Was it not stronger after his absence?’ This comparison, while flashy, is not quite apt according to Kavanaugh.

She asserts that Musk’s actions since he took the leadership of DOGE and coupled himself politically with Trump have shaken the American government rather than driven it towards order or compassion. ‘Elon, you’re not Buddha,’ said the ex-DEI head. ‘One of Buddha’s core teachings was that of compassion, karuna in Sanskrit, which embodies the wish for others to avoid suffering. Yet, all of Musk’s policy changes since joining the White House administration appear to undermine the welfare of the American people.’

She gave an example of Musk’s dedication to disrupting DEI initiatives within corporations and the federal government. Under Trump’s executive order, Musk and his team pushed to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the government bureaucracy, a clear divergence from the teachings of compassion and unity that Buddha promoted.

The disparity between Musk’s wealth and Buddha’s choice to forsake it is another major point of divergence. Currently, Musk sits atop Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index as the wealthiest individual worldwide, amassing a colossal net worth of roughly $332 billion. Buddha, on the contrary, spoke of greed, or raga, as one of the ‘three poisons’ that lead to most of the world’s suffering. The hoarding of wealth is a hallmark of greed, a trait that Musk displays, which is in stark contrast to Buddha’s teachings.

Thirdly, while the Buddha centered his life and teachings on service to humanity, the display of self-serving tendencies is a profound aspect of Musk’s recent political maneuverings. Participating in the Trump administration only seemed to amplify his focus on personal brand advancement and influence. People have witnessed his strategies such as proposing colossal buyouts for the entire federal workforce totaling 2.3 million employees, all as part of his agenda to trim down the federal machine. This is a clear example of prioritizing personal interests.

Opposing his behavior, Buddha was a fervent proponent of ‘dana’, or generosity. As explained by Lion’s Roar, ‘Generosity in Buddhism is not about a singular act—it’s a life principle. It encourages the cultivation of a generous attitude in every interaction you have with other individuals.’ The path toward true happiness, internal peace, and spiritual enlightenment, according to Buddhism, begins with developing a generous heart.

Therefore, equating Elon Musk to Buddha is a stretch, to say the least. Their principles and values seem to guide them in completely different directions. Musk’s recent behavior in his government role suggests that his values are more about personal advancement and gain, while Buddha championed selflessness, compassion, and caring for others.
