Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty In Alleged Murders Of Parents
Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that he murdered his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, in a case that has sent shockwaves through Hollywood.
The 32 year old faces two counts of first degree murder, along with a special circumstance allegation tied to multiple homicides. If convicted, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has said the case is also eligible for the death penalty.
During Monday’s arraignment, Reiner did not make any substantive statements beyond answering routine procedural questions. His legal defense strategy remains unclear. Court records and prior reporting have referenced alleged struggles with substance abuse and mental health.
Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered dead in their home on December 14. Authorities charged their son shortly afterward. The case drew additional attention after reports surfaced that Nick Reiner had allegedly been behaving erratically at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien shortly before the killings.
Nick Reiner’s siblings, Romy and Jake, issued a statement following the arraignment, describing the loss of their parents as unimaginable and devastating. They said their parents were not only their mother and father but also their best friends.
Police documents indicate that when Romy discovered her parents’ bodies, she told responding officers that her brother had been living in the home and described him as dangerous.
Last month, Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case for undisclosed reasons. Jackson, known for handling high profile cases, said he could not legally or ethically explain what prompted his departure but noted that he had spent extensive time reviewing the matter before stepping aside. The case is expected to proceed in the coming months.
