NYPD Commissioner Stands Against National Guard Assistance

In a private conversation with US Attorney General Pam Bondi, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch conveyed that New York City’s policing is fully competent in dealing with its crime rates, negating the need for the National Guard’s presence, according to sources within law enforcement. This conversation took place in the NYPD headquarters, also known as ‘One Police Plaza’, located in Manhattan, and lasted for approximately half an hour. The context of this conversation has been fueled by the increasing interest of President Trump in heightening the public safety quotient of the city. He is rumored to be considering the option of dispatching additional personnel to increase security in the city’s five boroughs.

President Trump has already set a precedent for this by sending the armed National Guard into Washington, DC, an area struggling with high crime numbers. Commissioner Tisch, however, stood her ground in the meeting with Bondi, firmly stating that New York City is managing its law and order situation efficiently and does not require assistance from the National Guard. Tisch maintains that the city’s existing security apparatus is proficiently maintaining public safety.

Furthermore, in the course of their discussion, Commissioner Tisch relayed to Attorney General Bondi that crime rates in the city have been descending steadily, reaching record lows. This includes the number of shootings and shooting-related casualties, both of which have seen a dramatic decrease this year. In her defense of NYPD’s effectiveness, Tisch also provided insights into how the department was aggressively tackling petty crimes and offenses to improve the city’s overall quality of life.

While New York City has largely curbed its crime, the NYPD acknowledges that there are still areas which are grappling with severe incidence of crime, including some neighborhoods in The Bronx. However, Commissioner Tisch expressed to Attorney General Bondi that the NYPD is intensely focusing on these problematic zones to eradicate the distressing crime rates, which are outliers compared to the city-wide situation.

In efforts to further fortify the city’s security measures, Tisch sought Bondi’s approval to grant the NYPD authority to neutralize potentially perilous drones. As of now, dealing with dangerous drones rests in the hands of federal agencies, though Tisch argued that permitting local enforcement bodies to act in such situations could lead to more swift and efficient mitigations. Attorney General Bondi was visiting New York City not just for this discussion, but also to delve into the federal government’s plea deal with a well-known Mexican drug lord.
