Online Connection Ends Tragically for Transgender Male in Canandaigua, NY

In Canandaigua, New York, a deeply tragic story unfolds. Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender male originally from Minnesota, traveled to New York with the aim of meeting a woman he had developed a romantic spark with, following an initial online connection. His mother, Linda Nordquist, shares her sentiment, stating ‘Sam was a soul who yearned for love, companionship, and a meaningful connection’. Residing with his mother prior to his departure, Sam embarked on his journey on September 28 to meet Precious N. Arzuga, the woman he had established a bond with online.

Although Sam had intended to return home by October 12, he chose to prolong his stay for the sake of exploring this newfound relationship deeply, according to his mother. Linda Nordquist recounts the last conversation she had with her son on New Year’s day, in which he expressed his love for her and made a promise to keep in touch. This anticipated call, however, never materialized making the mother deeply concerned.

A missing person’s report on Sam Nordquist was filed by his family on February 9, almost a month after the conversation with his mother. On February 13, a shocking discovery was made. Sam’s lifeless body was found in a field situated in Yates County. On the same day, local law enforcement charged five individuals in connection to the brutal disappearance and murder of Sam, following allegations of prolonged torture. Notably, among the accused was Precious N. Arzuga, the woman with whom Sam had developed a connection online and had journeyed to Canandaigua to meet.

Despite the warning given to Sam by his kin about the perils of engaging with individuals solely known through virtual platforms, Linda mentioned that Sam remained steadfast in his decision. The constant interaction between Sam and Precious through video calls since mid-July also indicated their growing bond. Linda revealed her concerns regarding the significant age difference of 14 years between Sam and Precious. She described her son as someone who featured a trusting and loving disposition.

Sam was notably passionate about nature, making his recent lack of outdoor activities in New York a cause for alarm amongst his family. His location tracking showed minimal movement from his motel, which was uncharacteristic for someone so inclined towards the outdoors. Besides, his communications with his family had shown a steady decline since October, raising more red flags.

December brought further concern when Linda Nordquist was approached by an employee from the Ontario County Department of Social Services. It was revealed that Sam had sought assistance from the department, expressing his struggles within a possessive relationship and confessing his longing for home. According to Linda, she was convinced that the incoming messages from her son were not authored by him considering the deviations in style and content. After January 31, Linda received no further communication from Sam’s mobile.

Sam’s elder sister, Kayla Nordquist, also expressed worry when her attempts to communicate with her brother remained unanswered. Kayla, who had sent pictures of her children to Sam, received no response and subsequent inquiries among Sam’s friends and colleagues bore no information of his whereabouts. On February 9, Kayla persuaded her mother to involve authorities to check on Sam’s welfare.

The State police search for Sam Nordquist came to naught. The result of their failed search led to Sam being officially reported missing. The search reached a grim conclusion when Sam’s body was recovered five days later in a field. Sam was described by his family as a man who found solace and joy in music and dancing, and was known to have a wide circle of friends, many of whom he met online.

According to Linda Nordquist, Sam had a shy disposition when initially meeting people, but would become more open as he got more comfortable. Kayla shared about her brother’s close relationships with his coworkers at Riesco Inc., an organization providing group homes for people with disabilities, where he had worked for almost six years. Linda, who also worked for the company, noted Sam’s satisfaction in serving vulnerable adults.

His mother recalled how Sam engaged with his clients, often involving them in various recreational tasks. She highlighted his love for dancing and wide taste for various genres of music. His fondness for recording his own dance performances led his mother to lovingly label him as ‘the most delightful kind of eccentric you could ever come across’. Sam was known to bring joy with his jesting nature and sense of humor.

Sam had a fondness for spending quality time with his family in natural surroundings. By Linda’s account, family trips to various zoos across the Midwest were a favored pastime. Sam was also a proud owner of two cats, Pumpkin and Storm, and shared a cherished bond as an uncle to his sister’s children. Mount Rushmore and nearby waterfalls were among his frequent visitation spots.

Currently, Linda and Kayla Nordquist have made their way to New York. They express gratitude towards the Central New York community for their warm embrace during these trying times. Linda has expressed her intentions to remain in the state until she can bring Sam’s remains back. She poignantly voiced, ‘I want him home where he belongs’, conveying a mother’s longing for her child.

Emphasizing her insistence that people must be aware of her son’s loving nature, Linda says, ‘Sam was an extraordinary individual who did no deserve his untimely fate.
