Repeated Offender Arrested for Brutal Subway Assault
A previously incarcinated individual facing homelessness, with a history of more than a dozen arrests, has recently been apprehended and charged with attempted murder due to a brutal attack on a subway commuter in the Bronx last week. Identified as Lateef Green, the 50-year-old was taken into custody less than half a day after the assault transpired. Reports claim that he attacked the 21-year-old victim with a knife featuring a metal knuckle grip on a southbound No. 2 train near the 219th Street station in Olinville at about 7 a.m.
It was reported that the assault took an unexpected turn as Green, while routinely moving between carriages of the southbound No. 2 train, suddenly launched an attack on the innocent commuter. The victim, much to his misfortune, was taken unawares and ended up with multiple wounds on his arm and stomach. Following the incident, he was immediately transferred to the nearest Jacobi Medical Center.
Once admitted to the medical center, the victim’s condition was evaluated to be steady. The wounds were severe in nature and had to be stitched on more than one occasion. Green was not only charged with attempted murder but also faced charges of assault, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and harassment.
During his preliminary hearing, the court ordered that Green be held on a bail of $300,000, payable as cash, or bond amounting to $900,000. Lateef Green carries a significantly troublesome record, with 13 former arrests and currently being on parole due to a hate crime assault that he was involved in, in Harlem.
The 50-year-old Green has a bleak history, with homelessness and previous offenses marking his life. His last known residence was a homeless shelter, about a mile from the station where the recent stabbing happened. Interestingly, he has been arrested on 13 occasions previous to this incident.
Lateef Green’s offending behavior extends back to the time he was culpable in a hate-induced assault that severely impaired another man’s facial anatomy, specifically his nose, back in March 2016. He had served slightly less than four years in prison due to this particular offense, exhibiting his tendency for violence.
The earlier hate-motivated passault took place in broad daylight, when Green vented his frustration saying, ‘There’s too many f—ts in this town’, before he proceeded to batter at the victim’s face and viciously kick him in the head and body on West 124th Street in Harlem.
When the law enforcement tried to apprehend him after the incident, Green did not cooperate. Rather, he lashed out by hurling his arms around and refusing to put them behind his back, as per standard arrest protocol. Consequently, he was also charged with resisting arrest, in addition to third-degree assault as a hate crime.
For his violent demeanor in the hate crime, Green was convicted in 2017. The court ruled that he was to serve a sentence of 3 to 6 years behind bars. He was subsequently incarcerated at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy, NY, where he remained from May of that year until January of 2021.
Following his prison term, Green was granted parole and released. The supervision term for his parole is slated to come to a close in October 2026. His recent involvement in violent actions, however, may alter this course, leading to a possible revocation of his parole.
After the most recent subway attack, the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision revealed their significant role in the arrest. Upon reviewing the photos provided by police, the department’s parole staff was able to draw a connection to Green and this alleged crime.
Consequent to his arrest and charges, the state Corrections department promptly issued a warrant. Green was subsequently ordered to remain in custody following a hearing that took place on the following Saturday. He continues to be held in custody pending the outcomes of various hearings.
Details from the department stated that Green is due to show up for another preliminary hearing scheduled for the subsequent Tuesday. In addition, he has a final hearing set for April 29, which will determine whether his parole will be withdrawn due to the new charges he faces.
Currently, Lateef Green is held at the Eric M. Taylor Center on Rikers Island. He has another court appearance lined up in the coming week in regard to the stabbing arrest. The outcome of these hearings is critical in determining whether Green will face additional prisoner time.
Green’s last notable arrest before this one was for an alleged evasion of public transport fare. This incident took place at a Brooklyn station in the month of February earlier this year, further demonstrating his disregard for public laws and regulations.
