Spike Lee and Denzel Washington Reunite in Upcoming Film ‘Highest 2 Lowest’

The official trailer for renowned film director Spike Lee’s latest project, titled ‘Highest 2 Lowest,’ saw its first public release on Monday, May 5. This sets up an anticipated nationwide theatrical run beginning sometime in August. The new crime thriller reunites Spike Lee with acclaimed actor Denzel Washington, marking their fifth cinematic collaboration.

Elevating the excitement further, this offering also brings together other major industry names, including up-and-coming actor A$AP Rocky. He will be portraying the son of Washington’s character and goes under the moniker ‘Yung Felon.’ This venture will extend beyond the usual for Rocky as it marks his first significant big-screen venture.

Also attracting attention is the feature film debut of Ice Spice, whose absence in the newly released trailer has sparked curiosity. The film, therefore, promises intrigue and excellence, boasting an ensemble that brings together veteran actors and emerging talent in an exhilarating new way.

Drawing inspirations from Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 noir film ‘High and Low,’ ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ lays down a narrative charting the journey of a character navigating the moral dichotomies of life, all played out in the backdrop of the bustling New York City. This setup presents an exploration into the human condition against a gritty urban backdrop.

The dialogue, as narrated by Denzel Washington in the revealing trailer, underscores the hard-hitting themes of the film. He lays bare the essence of the narrative saying, ‘There’s more to life than just making money. There’s integrity, there’s what you stand for, there’s what you actually believe in.’ It forebodes a gritty look into the interpersonal relationships within the chaos of money and the mayhem that follows.

Commenting on the impact of success and wealth on personal wellbeing, Washington asks the audience, ‘The hard times will come from the money and the mayhem follows… That’s the question I have for you, can you handle it? All money ain’t good money.’ A sobering reflection on the true cost of ambition and the ethical entanglements that often come with it.

The movie, shot across the breadth and width of New York City, is jointly produced by A24 in collaboration with Apple and 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. The locations no doubt will play an integral role in creating the mood and atmosphere of this eagerly anticipated piece.

Before it’s slated nationwide release, ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ will enjoy its grand premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. This viewing is scheduled for later in May, after which the film will finally grace theaters across the country on August 22.

Spike Lee, who is known for his unfiltered praise, lauded A$AP Rocky for his performance in the film. He could barely contain his excitement during an interview, saying, ‘And A$AP, man. Fire. He’s like, ‘I’m here too!’ It’s like, there’s some scenes with him and D head-to-head, he ain’t backin’ up.’

‘I’m very, very happy with the way the film turned out and looking forward to sharing it with the world,’ Lee added, alluding to the fact that ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ promises to resonate deeply with fans of his previous works and newcomers alike.

A$AP Rocky, in turn, had words of high praise for co-star Denzel Washington’s eclectic music taste. He shared a behind-the-scenes anecdote revealing that Washington had a deep appreciation for contemporary Memphis rappers like Pooh Shiesty and Moneybagg Yo.

Offering further insights, Rocky said during an interview with Vogue, ‘He likes to listen to Memphis rappers, but modern Memphis rappers.’ He then talked about the mutual admiration between them when he shared that Washington even started quoting lyrics from NLE Choppa.

Rocky expressed his admiration and respect for Washington’s level of engagement with the current music scene, attesting to the legendary actor’s dedication and capacity for constant evolution. ‘He’s really tapped in,’ Rocky said, rounding off his comments on a high note.

Earning the chance to work with an established industry veteran like Denzel Washington was more than Rocky had imagined for his big-screen debut. He confessed that working alongside Washington had been a ‘dream come true,’ thus emphasizing his respect and adoration towards the seasoned actor and hinting at the enhanced depth this collaboration will lend to the film.
