The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Officially on the Way

Mario is going interstellar. Nintendo has officially announced the next animated feature in its growing cinematic universe: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The announcement dropped Friday in the form of a new trailer on YouTube. The clip begins with Mario snoozing under a tree before a butterfly takes off, gliding across familiar Mushroom Kingdom landscapes. The camera then ascends skyward, where a Luma—the star-like creature from Super Mario Galaxy—shouts, “Let’s-a-go!” as the movie’s title appears on-screen.

Theatrical Release Set for April 3, 2026

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2026, expanding the world built by the wildly successful Super Mario Bros. Movie, which premiered in 2023.

That film, produced by Nintendo and Illumination, pulled in over $1.3 billion globally, becoming the most successful video game-to-movie adaptation of all time.

Game Tie-In: Galaxy Remasters Coming to Switch

In addition to the movie announcement, Nintendo confirmed during its September 12 Direct that remastered versions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released for the Nintendo Switch on October 2. The games originally debuted on the Nintendo Wii and are fan favorites for their gravity-defying level design and cosmic setting.

A New Chapter for Mario and Friends

While plot details and cast confirmations are still under wraps, the trailer suggests a leap from the grounded Mushroom Kingdom into deep space. The presence of Lumas points directly to the Super Mario Galaxy universe, which introduced players to Princess Rosalina and a host of new characters in the original games.

With the massive success of its first film, Nintendo appears committed to building out a long-term franchise—one that bridges generations of fans, gamers, and families alike.

Stay tuned—this is just the beginning of Mario’s next big adventure.
