Trump Wins Hearts of Pet Owners in 2024 Presidential Race
The approach towards the 2024 Presidential race may well be remembered as the ‘Pet Owners’ Bout.’ However, when the votes were counted, it seems the canine lovers reigned supreme. It was President-elect Donald Trump who captured the majority of the pet-owning electorate, owing considerably to dog owners, as showcased by a large-scale survey that included over 120,000 voters. Owners of dogs displayed a stronger inclination towards the Republican party and specifically, President-elect Trump, rather than Vice President Kamala Harris on the Democratic side.
Feline aficionados, on the other hand, found their loyalties evenly divided among the two candidates. A notable insight from the survey was that about two-thirds of respondents claimed ownership of a cat or a dog. In the grand scheme of political conversations, pet owners don’t traditionally receive high political focus. 2024, however, was an anomaly due to remarks made by Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, concerning ‘childless cat ladies’ which briefly triggered discussions during the campaign.
Despite this, women who were exclusive cat owners emerged to favor Vice President Harris in significant numbers. These women, although significant, comprised a relatively smaller slice of the total voters, and it appeared the pet-owning populace did not significantly penalize Vance’s remarks when casting their votes for the Republican ticket. An interesting observation was how female voters who were only cat owners were more inclined towards Harris. This trend held steady for cat and dog owners and those who possessed neither pet.
More than half of the women owning only a cat sided with Harris, a statistic that was mirrored by female voters who didn’t possess cats or dogs. However, this endorsement did not extend to the male demographic. A considerable fifty-plus percent of men owning exclusively cats were found in Trump’s court. Unbelievably, this demographic was more prone to a negative sentiment, more so than female dog owners or women holding both cats and dogs.
They also presented a higher negative inclination towards Trump and the Republican Party compared to the general female voting populace. A plausible justification points to the predisposition of female cat owners towards not voting for Trump even prior to the controversial statements made by Vance. A paltry 40 percent of female voters with only cats identified as Republicans, further substantiating this theory.
The results of the 2024 elections imply Democrats might need to dial up their efforts to woo dog owners. The canine-loving voters, whether they owned a cat or not, seemed to back Trump more than the opposition. Furthermore, they constituted a larger fraction of the total voters. Feline owners without a canine companion rose to a mere 15 percent of the overall voters.
In a stark contrast, one-fifth of voters owned both cats and dogs, and close to a third of voters had only canines for pets. This significant voting cohort found in dog owners undeniably played a key role in the elections. Trump was backed by a notable 60 percent of men and half of women having an exclusive dog ownership.
In an unexpected turn, Trump had made contested declarations about immigrants in Ohio pilfering and consuming people’s cats and dogs. However, no factual evidence supports these claims influencing the voting preferences of pet owners. The more likely driver of voting behavior among pet owners was party loyalty.
Around 60 percent of men owning dogs only identified themselves as Republicans, and so did about half the women who owned dogs. Thus it won’t be an easy climb for Democrats seeking to win over dog enthusiasts. On a side note, neither Trump nor Harris reportedly owned pets, which means there were no furry friends accompanying the candidates during the campaign trail.
This particular absence might be addressed in future campaigns, with more four-legged companions on the route. All taking into consideration, the pet ownership aspect injected a unique angle to the 2024 Presidential race, highlighting the subtle factors that play into voters’ decisions.
