The temporary increase in crime during the COVID pandemic era seemed to be a deviation from the trend. The matter of the recent shooting in Washington Heights on a Saturday night, while not specifically referred to in his statement, was previously categorized by the President as a demonstration of inadequate border control measures.
Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, echoed his sentiments relating to the incident at a press conference discussing the shooting aftermath, which resulted in the agent, who is 42-years-old, recovering from gun wounds. A strong condemnation was expressed by Noem, stating, ‘There is absolutely no justification for a person with such egregious criminal record to roam freely in New York City’.

Regarding the alleged perpetrator, Mora was confirmed to have entered the U.S. illicitly via Arizona in 2023, which he hails from the Dominican Republic.
