Woody Allen Mocks Biden-Harris Despite Casting a Reluctant Vote
Film industry veteran Woody Allen evidently did not cast his ballot for Donald Trump when he had the chance, but it seems he still maintains some level of professional admiration for him. More specifically, Allen shared glimpses of his past experience directing the former President during a recent appearance on the ‘Club Random’ podcast.
During the discussion, Allen recalled his directorial stint with Trump for the 1998 feature film ‘Celebrity’. In this film, Trump gets some screen time, playing himself, with grandiose plans to purchase and bulldoze the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral to erect his own monument of architectural majesty in its place.
Allen had words of commendation for Trump’s professional decorum during their cinematic collaboration. He explained Trump was utterly respectful to everyone involved on set, garnering a nod of approval for his acting prowess. However, the bright praises cast on the former President might ruffle some feathers.
Despite praising Trump’s acting and professional conduct, Allen was quick to point out that his personal political beliefs collided head on with Trump’s policy decisions. Just because Allen interacted cordially with Trump in the past did not mean he agreed with the political philosophy Trump subsequently instituted.
Unsurprisingly, Allen shared that his chosen candidate was none other than Kamala Harris – presently serving under President Biden. However, reportedly, she did not necessarily serve as the epitome of ideal governance squared with Allen’s presumably liberal preferences.
Allen’s jesting comment about desiring to direct Trump in the Oval Office, with an added quip about implementing more liberal policies, was at best a casual, tongue-in-cheek aside. However, chances for such a liberal shift in the Oval Office were as thin as morning mist.
In a conversation with Maher about politics, the intricate dance of comparison between politics and acting unfolded. Yet, Allen was quite indifferent to the persona projected. Rather, his discontent stemmed from the policies implemented under the guise of that persona.
Summing up his thoughts, Allen opined: ‘I can only judge what I know from directing him in film. And he was pleasant to work, and with very professional, very polite to everyone.’ Seemingly, Trump’s conduct on the cinematic platform was exemplary, according to Allen’s first-hand experience.
As fate would have it, both Trump and Allen are now excluded from the coveted Hollywood tribe, making them somewhat estranged fellows. This shared exile from the entertainment industry could perhaps sow the seeds for a potential future collaboration between the two.
However, while Allen’s professional respect for Trump seemed clear, his personal opinions appeared to generate less than flattering sentiment when it came to Biden and Harris. While it seemed he had voted for Harris, there was an apparent lack of enthusiastic support and endorsement for the pair.
It’s worth noting that an air of ridicule surrounded any potential praise towards Biden and Harris. Allen made it clear that, despite casting his vote in their favor, he did not necessarily believe they were the right fit, highlighting a somewhat minority-held stance.
Even amongst the so-called Hollywood liberal elite, Allen’s hesitant endorsement highlighted the divided masses. Despite their ostensible left-leaning stance, there appeared to be an underlying cynicism when it came to Biden and Harris’s popularity or effectiveness in delivering on their promised policies.
To put it bluntly, optics and professional gestures aside, Allen’s seeming support of the Biden-Harris administration was enveloped in an air of skepticism at best, and discreet mockery at worst. Isolated in their Hollywood hiatus, both Allen and Trump continued to draw divisive reactions from within the Hollywood and political spheres alike.
