Trump Admin Backs Nationwide Push To Protect Kids From Transgender Procedures

The Trump administration is throwing its full support behind a new legislative proposal aimed at ending transgender medical procedures for minors across the country.

In a statement Wednesday, the Department of Justice announced it had officially transmitted legislation to Congress that would ban so-called “gender-affirming care” for children — including irreversible surgeries, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones — and open the door to lawsuits against any medical professional or institution involved.

Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the need for urgent action: “The Department of Justice has heard from far too many families who have been devastated by mutilative medical procedures that fly in the face of basic biology. While we continue our ongoing legal battle to protect children, we appreciate our colleagues in Congress who are working diligently alongside us to end these abusive procedures once and for all.”

The bill, introduced by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Congressman Bob Onder (R-MO), is titled the Victims of Chemical or Surgical Mutilation Act. It seeks to prohibit doctors from performing gender-transition surgeries on minors, such as double mastectomies and genital procedures, and to outlaw the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones on children under 18.

Supporters of the bill argue that such drugs — often prescribed to children as young as 11 — can lead to permanent infertility, damage heart health, and negatively impact bone density and development.

Critically, the legislation would empower detransitioners — individuals who later regret undergoing transgender procedures — to file civil lawsuits against the doctors, clinics, and hospitals that facilitated their treatment. These individuals would be able to sue for both economic and noneconomic damages, including emotional distress and costs associated with reversing the procedures. The bill provides a 25-year window beyond the plaintiff’s 18th birthday to bring a case forward.

President Donald Trump has already taken executive action on this front. In January, he signed an executive order cutting off federal funding for any organization that performs or promotes transgender procedures on minors. The administration has also applied pressure to hospitals and medical networks across the country to cease the practice entirely.

The White House press office said the move is part of a broader campaign to protect children and “restore sanity to American medicine.” With Trump’s backing, the bill is expected to gain rapid traction among Republican lawmakers — and spark fierce debate in Congress in the months ahead.
