Trump Rips Jay Jones Over ‘Sick and Demented’ Texts Suggesting Violence Against Republicans
President Donald Trump blasted Virginia Democrat Jay Jones on Sunday, calling his past text messages “sick and demented” and demanding that he immediately drop out of the race for attorney general. Trump’s remarks came after recently surfaced texts from 2022 showed Jones joking about murdering Republican lawmakers and making grotesque references to their families.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump didn’t mince words. “It has just come out that the Radical Left Lunatic, Jay Jones, who is running against Jason Miyares, the GREAT Attorney General in Virginia, made SICK and DEMENTED jokes… concerning the murdering of a Republican Legislator, his wife, and their children,” he wrote.
Trump slammed Jones’ comments as “not funny” and said even Democrats were privately acknowledging that the remarks crossed a red line. He singled out Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger for refusing to condemn Jones, calling her “weak and ineffective” and accusing her of trying to sweep the controversy under the rug as she campaigns for governor.
“Democrat Jay Jones should drop out of the Race, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote. “And the People of Virginia must continue to have a GREAT Attorney General in Jason Miyares who, by the way, has my Complete and Total Endorsement — JASON WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
The controversy exploded after a series of vile text messages Jones sent in 2022 were leaked on Friday. In one message, Jones wrote: “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler and Pol Pot. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head,” referring to then–Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert.
In another message, he said he would “piss on the graves” of dead Republican lawmakers, and in a particularly disturbing comment, he suggested Gilbert wouldn’t change his politics unless he and his wife “watched one of their own children die.”
So far, Jay Jones has refused to end his campaign or issue a meaningful apology, and Virginia Democrats have remained largely silent, fueling backlash from both sides of the aisle.
Trump made it clear that as long as Jones remains in the race, voters should rally behind Miyares. “Jason Miyares has my full support,” Trump said. “He’s a fighter, a patriot, and someone who will never stoop to the level of threatening political violence.”
With the general election looming, the pressure is mounting — and Trump’s message is unmistakable: political violence, even in jest, has no place in public life.
