House Republicans Push DOJ to Investigate Mamdani’s Citizenship, Float Deportation Over Form Omissions
Two Republican lawmakers are demanding the Justice Department review New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani’s naturalization records and consider revoking his U.S. citizenship, claiming he may have omitted critical information during his 2018 application.
Rep. Randy Fine (R?Fla.) called for a sweeping review of citizenship grants over the last three decades, singling out Mamdani as a starting point. Fine accused the Democratic socialist of being part of a broader “enemy within” that has infiltrated the country under false pretenses.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R?Tenn.) has gone further, publicly calling for Mamdani’s deportation and asserting that the candidate failed to disclose ties to the Democratic Socialists of America, which Ogles called a “communist organization” that should have disqualified him from becoming a citizen.
“He lied on his naturalization form,” Ogles told Newsmax, “and under current law, that’s grounds for denaturalization and removal.”
Ogles also cited Mamdani’s past support for the “Holy Land Five,” a group convicted in 2008 of funneling money to Hamas through a now-defunct Muslim charity.
Mamdani denies being a communist and says the accusations are a desperate smear attempt. However, controversy deepened when Mamdani recently posed for a photo with Imam Siraj Wahhaj — who was once named an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
Immigration law allows revocation of citizenship if an individual is found to have misrepresented affiliations with “any Communist or totalitarian party.” The citizenship form asks applicants if they’ve ever been associated “in any way” with such groups.
Rep. Shri Thanedar (D?Mich.) defended Mamdani and called for Ogles to be censured for pushing what he described as “Islamophobic attacks.”
The Department of Justice did not confirm whether a probe is underway, citing delays tied to the ongoing government shutdown.
President Trump previously called Mamdani a “communist lunatic,” fueling calls on the right to block his rise in New York politics.
