Nancy Pelosi Backs Off Impeachment Talk, Says Democrats Need “Cause” to Go After Trump Again

After years of leading the charge to impeach President Donald Trump — twice — former Speaker Nancy Pelosi now says Democrats shouldn’t rush to try it again. In a rare moment of restraint, the California Democrat told USA Today’s Susan Page that another impeachment shouldn’t be on the agenda unless Trump “crosses the line.”

Pelosi made the comments during an interview on The Excerpt podcast, just weeks after announcing she won’t seek reelection in 2026. When asked if she would support a third impeachment effort if Democrats retake the House in 2026, she shut down the idea — at least for now.

From All-In to Pulling Back

“No, I mean unless he — if he crosses the border again,” Pelosi said, without elaborating on what “crosses the border” meant. “But that’s not an incidental thing you say — ‘We’re going to do that.’ No, there has to be cause.”

It’s a far cry from her posture during Trump’s first term, when she presided over two failed impeachments — one over a phone call to Ukraine, and the second following the January 6 protests at the Capitol. Both efforts fell flat in the Senate, despite media fanfare and relentless partisan messaging.

Still Blaming Republicans for Failure

Pelosi couldn’t help but throw jabs at the GOP-controlled Senate, blaming them for not removing Trump from office during her previous attempts. “Our founders knew that there could be a rogue president,” she said. “They didn’t know there’d be a rogue president at the same time a rogue Senate that didn’t have the courage to do the right thing.”

She downplayed the bipartisan failures of both impeachment trials, dismissing the constitutional standards required to remove a sitting president and instead suggesting that Republicans lacked “courage.”

Why the Shift Now?

Pelosi’s measured tone may be driven by political reality: Trump remains more popular than ever within the GOP, is leading in swing states, and has expanded his base among working-class voters, Latinos, and independents. Another impeachment attempt would likely backfire, as it did before — fueling Trump’s support and reinforcing the image of a political elite desperate to stop him by any means necessary.

There’s also the issue of credibility. After two failed attempts and years of political theater, even many Democrats have grown weary of impeachment as a partisan tool rather than a constitutional remedy.

Impeachment Fatigue or Political Strategy?

Pelosi’s remarks signal that Democrats might be recalibrating — not out of principle, but out of calculation. With Trump dominating headlines, rallying crowds, and pulling even in multiple national polls, another impeachment stunt could blow up in their faces.

For now, Pelosi is advising patience. But if Democrats sniff blood in the water, there’s little doubt the cries for impeachment will return — louder than ever. All they need is a pretext.
