Pentagon Sends Another 2,500 Marines Toward Iran As Pressure Builds In Strait Of Hormuz

The Pentagon is deploying another major Marine force to the Middle East, sending roughly 2,500 troops aboard a three-ship expeditionary unit as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.

The San Diego-based USS Boxer amphibious assault ship, along with two supporting vessels, is heading toward the region as part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The deployment marks the second such move in a matter of days, signaling a rapid buildup of U.S. military power near Iran.

A separate Marine unit of similar size is already en route, led by the USS Tripoli, which was recently reported crossing the Strait of Malacca.

That group is expected to reach waters near Iran by the end of March.

Together, the deployments will significantly expand the U.S. military presence as President Donald Trump pushes to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The critical waterway remains effectively closed amid the conflict, disrupting global shipping and driving up energy prices.

Amphibious assault ships like the Boxer and Tripoli are designed for rapid-response operations, giving the Pentagon flexible options ranging from air support to potential ground missions.

Trump has not ruled out further escalation.

While he said Thursday he has no immediate plans to put boots on the ground, he also made clear he would not publicly telegraph military strategy.

In a Friday interview, the president said he needs more “numbers” to secure the strait, following sharp criticism of NATO allies who have declined to assist militarily.

The latest deployment follows a familiar pattern.

Previous large-scale U.S. military buildups have preceded major operations, including the strikes that launched the current conflict with Iran.

The growing presence of Marine expeditionary units suggests the Pentagon is preparing for a wide range of scenarios.

That could include securing key shipping lanes, deterring further Iranian aggression, or potentially taking more direct control of strategic areas if ordered.

With thousands of additional troops now moving into position, the United States is rapidly expanding its capabilities in the region as the situation continues to evolve.
