Trump Administration Sues New York Times Over Alleged Anti-White Discrimination
The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against The New York Times alleging the company engaged in racial and gender discrimination by passing over a white male employee for a promotion in favor of a minority female candidate.
The complaint, filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in federal court in New York, claims the newspaper’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives played a direct role in hiring and promotion decisions inside the company.
According to the lawsuit, a white male employee with extensive experience covering real estate journalism was excluded from the final interview process for a senior editor role in 2025. The EEOC alleges that every candidate who advanced to the final round was not a white male and that the position ultimately went to an outside candidate described as a non-white female with limited real estate journalism experience.
The complaint argues that the hiring process was influenced by the company’s stated diversity goals rather than merit alone. Federal officials pointed to internal policies and public statements from the Times emphasizing efforts to increase racial diversity and representation in leadership positions.
The lawsuit also references internal company communications from 2024 in which senior editors allegedly discussed concerns over the number of minority leaders within the organization and talked about “targeted efforts” to address those figures.
EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas said the case is about enforcing equal treatment under federal law regardless of race or gender.
“There is no such thing as ‘reverse discrimination,’” Lucas said. “All race or sex discrimination is equally unlawful.”
The New York Times strongly denied the allegations and accused the administration of pursuing a politically motivated case. Company spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha said hiring decisions are based on qualifications and merit, not race or gender.
“Our employment practices are merit-based and focused on recruiting and promoting the best talent in the world,” she said, adding that the company intends to fight the lawsuit aggressively.
The case comes amid broader scrutiny of corporate DEI initiatives under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has moved to challenge race-conscious hiring and admissions policies across both the public and private sectors.
If the lawsuit moves forward, it could become one of the most high-profile legal battles yet over workplace diversity policies and how companies balance representation goals with federal anti-discrimination law.
