Trump-Backed Vivek Ramaswamy Wins Ohio GOP Governor Primary
Vivek Ramaswamy secured the Republican nomination for governor of Ohio on Tuesday, setting up a closely watched general election showdown against Democrat Amy Acton.
Ramaswamy, who rose to national prominence during his 2024 presidential campaign before becoming a leading ally of President Donald Trump, defeated businessman Casey Putsch in the Republican primary.
The biotech entrepreneur celebrated the victory by telling supporters that the race represents a defining moment for Ohio’s future.
“I’m proud to officially say that today it is our pleasure to become the Republican nominee for the governor of Ohio,” Ramaswamy said during his victory speech.
He also framed the upcoming general election as one of the most significant in state history, arguing there is a sharp ideological divide between himself and Acton.
“There has never been a greater contrast between two candidates,” he said while previewing the November contest.
Acton, a physician and former director of the Ohio Department of Health, captured the Democratic nomination unopposed. She previously gained national attention for overseeing Ohio’s public health response during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The winner in November will replace term-limited Republican Gov. Mike DeWine.
Democrats quickly attacked the Republican nominee following the race call. Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper accused Ramaswamy of pushing policies she claimed would hurt working families in Ohio.
Despite Ohio trending heavily Republican in recent years, Democrats believe the governor’s race could still become competitive. Trump carried the state comfortably in 2024, continuing the GOP’s dominance there over the past decade.
Vice President JD Vance returned to his home state on primary day and publicly confirmed he voted for Ramaswamy, further underscoring the administration’s support behind his campaign.
Ramaswamy now heads into the general election with strong backing from Trump-world figures and a growing national profile as Republicans look to maintain control of the governor’s mansion in a state that has become increasingly red.
