Gavin Newsom Raises $250,000 After Asking Supporters To Fund Fight Against DOJ Probe
California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s political organization raised approximately $250,000 after he appealed to supporters for money to help fight a federal investigation involving him, his wife and members of his political circle.
Newsom issued the fundraising request through his Campaign for Democracy political action committee shortly after publicly claiming that President Trump had directed the Justice Department to target him because he may run for president in 2028.
The Democratic governor told supporters that he needed both a legal and political strategy to respond to the investigation. His appeal portrayed the probe as a politically motivated effort designed to damage his national ambitions.
Campaign for Democracy reportedly received thousands of donations following the request, with many contributors giving small amounts. Newsom’s team has used the controversy to rally Democrats and present him as one of President Trump’s leading political opponents.
The federal investigation reportedly includes scrutiny of tax matters involving Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as well as questions surrounding former aides and associates. Newsom has not been charged with a crime, and the Justice Department has not publicly detailed the full scope of its work.
Newsom has repeatedly accused federal investigators of conducting a fishing expedition. He claims agents have contacted former employees, family friends and others in an effort to uncover evidence of wrongdoing.
Reports have indicated that at least some of the investigations began before President Trump returned to office, raising questions about Newsom’s claim that the probes were ordered solely as political retaliation.
Republicans have accused Newsom of attempting to turn serious legal scrutiny into a fundraising opportunity and an early campaign platform for a possible White House run.
The fundraising success shows that the investigation could provide Newsom with a political boost among Democratic donors, even as questions remain about his finances, his wife’s organizations and the conduct of people who have worked inside his administration.
