Bernie Sanders Defends Backing Disgraced Senate Candidate Despite Mounting Scandals

Sen. Bernie Sanders says he has no regrets about standing by former Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, even after a series of controversies and allegations ultimately forced the Democrat to abandon his campaign. Speaking on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Sanders defended his early support for Platner and insisted he does not believe he should have withdrawn his endorsement sooner.

Sanders was one of Platner’s earliest and most influential supporters, helping propel the Maine oyster farmer into the national spotlight during his Senate campaign. As controversy mounted over offensive social media posts, allegations of infidelity, a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and accusations of sexual misconduct, Sanders continued to defend Platner, frequently arguing that outside political forces and wealthy interests were attempting to derail his campaign.

It was only after Platner faced a rape allegation from a former girlfriend that Sanders publicly urged him to suspend his campaign. By that point, Democratic leaders across the country had largely abandoned Platner, and he eventually withdrew from the race. Sanders acknowledged the campaign ended badly but maintained he did not regret the support he had offered earlier in the contest.

Following Platner’s withdrawal, Maine Democrats selected former state Senate President Troy Jackson as their new nominee to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Sanders quickly endorsed Jackson, praising him as a strong advocate for working-class Americans and economic reform.

During the interview, Sanders was also questioned about whether progressive candidates receive sufficient vetting before earning endorsements from national figures like himself. He acknowledged that not every candidate undergoes extensive scrutiny before receiving support but argued that he prioritizes backing candidates who champion working families and economic fairness.

The episode has renewed criticism of the Democratic Party’s vetting process, with Republicans arguing that numerous warning signs surrounding Platner were ignored until the allegations became impossible to overlook. While Sanders remains steadfast in defending his decision-making, the controversy continues to cast a shadow over one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate races as Democrats attempt to regroup behind their new nominee.
