Nancy Pelosi Hints Gavin Newsom Is Planning a 2028 Presidential Run
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared to reveal California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s presidential ambitions Tuesday, speaking about a potential White House campaign as though the governor’s decision to run may already be expected.
Pelosi was discussing Newsom’s political future when she praised the California Democrat as hardworking and politically talented. But her choice of words attracted attention when she said, “When he decides to run, we’ll find out what that will be,” rather than treating a presidential campaign as purely hypothetical.
The remark immediately added fuel to speculation that Newsom is preparing to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Newsom has spent much of President Trump’s second term increasing his national profile while becoming one of the administration’s most outspoken Democratic opponents.
Pelosi and Newsom have longstanding political and personal ties dating back to San Francisco. Pelosi has repeatedly praised the governor and previously suggested that he possesses the qualities necessary to compete on the national stage.
Newsom himself has done little to quiet speculation surrounding his ambitions. He has acknowledged that he will seriously consider running for president after the 2026 midterm elections, leaving open the possibility of entering what could become a crowded Democratic primary.
The California governor has also dramatically expanded his political activities outside his home state. He has traveled across the country, raised money for Democratic candidates and recently visited Michigan as Democrats prepare for a closely watched Senate battle in November.
Newsom has simultaneously attempted to broaden his political image by engaging directly with conservatives and questioning some positions embraced by progressives. His podcast has featured prominent figures from the right, giving him an opportunity to reach voters who would not normally follow a Democratic governor from California.
His increasingly aggressive clashes with President Trump have also provided Newsom with a national platform. The two have battled over immigration, environmental regulations, taxes and California policies, allowing Newsom to position himself as one of Trump’s most visible Democratic adversaries.
Pelosi could become an important ally if Newsom ultimately enters the race. The former speaker remains deeply connected to Democratic donors and party leaders after decades at the highest levels of national politics, potentially giving Newsom access to a powerful network of political support.
Newsom has not officially declared a 2028 campaign, and Pelosi stopped short of explicitly saying that he has privately decided to run. Still, her wording offered one of the clearest hints yet that people close to the California governor increasingly view a Newsom presidential campaign as a question of when rather than if.
