Armed Man Arrested at Trump Golf Course Allegedly Had Melania Trump’s Schedule and Secret Service Details
An armed man arrested at President Donald Trump’s California golf course allegedly possessed detailed information about first lady Melania Trump’s schedule and members of the president’s Secret Service protection team, according to information revealed during a court hearing Wednesday.
Jeanine John Taele, 38, was arrested earlier this month at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes, just days before the president was scheduled to visit. Federal agents allegedly spotted Taele walking around the property, taking photographs and videos while appearing to monitor security preparations.
Prosecutors say investigators discovered seven notebooks containing 208 pages of writings, drawings and sketches. The material allegedly included diagrams of Trump’s golf course, lists involving Secret Service schedules, information about individual security personnel and copies of Melania Trump’s schedule.
Authorities also said Taele’s writings contained detailed information about surviving “off the grid.” Los Angeles County Judge John Lonergan Jr. described the allegations as “alarming,” particularly amid heightened concerns about political violence ahead of the midterm elections.
When deputies initially detained Taele, they allegedly discovered a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition in his pants pocket. A subsequent search of his vehicle reportedly uncovered a loaded handgun with a round already in the chamber along with another magazine containing hollow-point ammunition.
Taele allegedly told authorities that he worked for the State Department and was at the golf course as part of a security detail. Investigators later searched his home in Downey, California, where they discovered what authorities described as a substantial weapons cache.
Among the items allegedly recovered were an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, large quantities of ammunition and radio-signal equipment. Investigators also recovered additional notebooks containing statements they considered concerning.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, Secret Service and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have all participated in the investigation. Authorities have not publicly alleged that Taele had developed a specific plan to attack Trump or the first lady, and his defense attorney has warned against assuming a motive before the evidence is fully examined.
The case took another turn Wednesday when a pretrial evaluation determined that Taele was not mentally competent to stand trial. The judge suspended the criminal proceedings and transferred the matter to a mental health court, where another hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9.
Taele is a Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. His public defender, A.J. Bayne, emphasized his military service and said Taele has a supportive family, arguing that people should not rush to conclusions about why he possessed the materials or why he was at the golf course.
The arrest has attracted heightened attention because Trump has faced repeated security threats in recent years. Most notably, he survived the July 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a bullet struck his ear during a campaign rally.
Trump was also the target of a separate alleged assassination attempt at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, later that year. Those incidents led to intense scrutiny of Secret Service procedures and increased concern about individuals conducting surveillance around locations regularly visited by the president.
The Secret Service has declined to discuss specific protective intelligence connected to Taele. The agency has emphasized, however, that it thoroughly investigates activity that could indicate a threat or unusual interest in anyone receiving Secret Service protection.
Trump previously addressed Taele’s arrest by noting the extraordinary level of threats surrounding his presidency. The latest revelation that the suspect allegedly possessed Melania Trump’s schedule, Secret Service information and extensive notes about the president’s golf course is now raising even more serious questions about exactly what he was doing before federal agents intervened.
