Trump Bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico From White House ‘Effective Immediately’
President Donald Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are being barred from the White House, escalating his long-running dispute with major news organizations over coverage of his administration.
Trump announced the decision in a post on Truth Social, saying the ban would take effect immediately. He accused the three organizations of repeatedly publishing false or misleading coverage about him, his administration and the United States.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately,” Trump wrote before identifying CNN, MS NOW and Politico as the organizations affected. He cited what he characterized as their constant reporting of “FAKE NEWS” as the reason for the decision.
Trump did not identify a specific article or broadcast that triggered Friday’s action. He also indicated that the three organizations might not be the only ones affected, saying additional news outlets could be added to the list.
The announcement immediately raised questions about what the ban will mean in practice, including whether reporters from the organizations will lose access to the White House complex entirely or be excluded from particular briefings and presidential events. Initial reports did not provide detailed information about how the restrictions would be implemented.
The move follows previous disputes between the Trump administration and news organizations over White House access. In 2025, the administration restricted Associated Press journalists from certain presidential events during a dispute over the news agency’s terminology for the Gulf of Mexico, prompting an ongoing legal battle.
Trump has frequently accused major media organizations of unfair or inaccurate coverage and has repeatedly criticized individual journalists, television networks and newspapers. He has also pursued legal action against several media organizations during his second term.
The decision is expected to generate another debate over the extent of a president’s authority to determine which journalists receive access to the White House. Legal disputes over press access can implicate First Amendment protections as well as the government’s procedures for granting and revoking credentials.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico had not immediately issued detailed public responses when the decision was first reported. The National Press Club also did not immediately respond to requests for comment cited in initial reporting.
For now, Trump’s announcement represents a significant change in access for three national news organizations that regularly cover the presidency. The White House has not yet publicly detailed how long the restrictions will remain in place or exactly how they will affect reporters from the three outlets.
