Ilhan Omar Fires Back at Trump After Federal Agents Raid Her Washington Home in Immigration Fraud Investigation
Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar responded defiantly Monday after federal investigators searched her Washington, D.C., residence as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving allegations surrounding her immigration history. The Minnesota congresswoman accused President Trump of using federal law enforcement to intimidate political opponents and declared that she would not back down.
Omar issued a public statement on X shortly after news of the early morning operation emerged. She confirmed that she was unharmed and accused the administration of targeting her because of her longstanding opposition to the president.
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote.
The congresswoman also accused Trump of conducting a yearslong campaign against her reputation, describing the federal investigation as another escalation in their ongoing political confrontation.
“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” she stated.
Omar concluded her response with a direct message to the president, declaring, “I will not be silenced.”
Her remarks followed a predawn search conducted by Homeland Security Investigations agents at her residence in Northeast Washington. Federal personnel were observed entering and leaving the property, with agents reportedly carrying boxes of materials from the home.
The operation attracted attention from neighbors, some of whom were alarmed by the presence of federal law enforcement officers during the early morning hours. Authorities temporarily restricted access to the surrounding area while investigators conducted the search.
The Justice Department confirmed that agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant obtained as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Officials declined to disclose the specific evidence sought or the full scope of the inquiry.
Federal authorities have reportedly been examining immigration documents associated with Omar’s arrival in the United States as a child. Some of those records were completed by her late father when the family immigrated from Somalia.
The investigation follows years of allegations raised by Republican officials concerning Omar’s immigration history and previous marriage. Those allegations have included claims of marriage fraud, which the congresswoman has repeatedly denied.
No criminal charges against Omar have been announced, and the existence of a federal investigation does not establish that she committed a crime. Investigators have also not publicly identified the specific offenses being examined.
The Trump administration previously acknowledged that federal authorities were reviewing allegations involving the congresswoman. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in September that an investigation was underway, while Vice President JD Vance had earlier discussed the possibility of pursuing immigration fraud allegations.
President Trump has frequently criticized Omar over her political positions, immigration background and opposition to his administration. The two have repeatedly clashed over immigration enforcement, national security and the federal government’s treatment of immigrant communities.
Omar was born in Somalia in 1982 and fled the country’s civil war with her family. After spending time in a refugee camp in Kenya, she immigrated to the United States during the 1990s and became an American citizen in 2000.
She was first elected to Congress in 2018 and represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis. Omar is also a prominent member of the progressive group of Democratic lawmakers commonly known as the Squad.
The timing of the search has generated additional controversy because it occurred just three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections. Omar is seeking reelection to a fifth term in the House of Representatives.
Democratic congressional leaders criticized the operation and questioned whether the administration was using federal investigative powers against a political opponent during an election campaign. They pointed to longstanding Justice Department practices intended to prevent investigative actions from improperly influencing elections.
Federal officials have not publicly explained why the search was conducted at this particular time. The Justice Department has maintained that the operation was authorized by a judge and carried out as part of an active criminal investigation.
The administration has previously argued that allegations of immigration fraud should be investigated regardless of an individual’s political position. Federal officials have emphasized that holding elected office does not provide immunity from criminal investigations.
Omar, meanwhile, maintains that the allegations surrounding her immigration history are false and that the administration’s actions are politically motivated. Her latest statement indicates that she intends to continue publicly challenging Trump while the investigation proceeds.
The congresswoman has not announced any changes to her reelection campaign following the search. She remains on the ballot in Minnesota as Democrats and Republicans compete for control of Congress.
For now, the Justice Department has confirmed the search but has not disclosed what evidence investigators collected or whether additional enforcement actions are planned. Omar’s response has intensified an already contentious political dispute, with the federal investigation continuing as Election Day approaches.
