The world of dance has recently suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Julian Benson at the age of 54. The long battle with Cystic Fibrosis he had braved since an early age sadly came to an end, enveloped by the support and company of family and close friends. Throughout his struggle, Benson’s enduring spirit and energetic radiance remained firm, shining until his final moments.
His family publicized the heart-wrenching news with profound grief and sorrow. They shared, ‘We are disheartened to announce the untimely departure of our cherished Julian. He left us in tranquility, cherished by his nearest kin and dearest companions, following a brave fight against Cystic Fibrosis. His unyielding resilience, amiable nature, and vibrant sparkle remained intact till the end.’
Julian started his journey as a talent agent and choreographer, later becoming a household name in 2017 when he graced Dancing with the Stars as a judge. His uniqueness on the show was highlighted with his signature sparkly outfits, earning him the playful nickname of ‘Captain Sparkle’. Benson quickly became a favorite among viewers, not only for his witty remarks but also for his consistent encouragement and kindness towards the participants.
Receiving a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis at the tender age of two didn’t deter Benson; instead, he chose to celebrate life. His passion for dance blossomed from an early age – he started dancing at four, and by 14 he was already a professional. This notable accomplishment is exemplary, even more so considering he endured a chronic lung condition throughout.
Julian refused to let his ailment overshadow his zeal or determination, which were defining elements in his successful career. Born in Australia, Julian relocated to Ireland when he was only 12-years-old. Astonishingly, Benson concealed his Cystic Fibrosis diagnosis for over four decades, only revealing it during an emotional appearance in 2018.
For more than 40 years, Benson chose to keep his Cystic Fibrosis a secret, announcing it publicly in a heartfelt speech in 2018. It was during this appearance that he shared his lifelong battle and his desire to establish a charity to assist those fighting the same disease. He announced the launch of the Julian Benson Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (JBCFF), articulating, ‘Cystic Fibrosis is a part of me, but it does not have control over me.’
Julian was always clear about his ultimate goal: to offer essential services and support to those battling Cystic Fibrosis and their families. This also included providing ‘home away from home’ comfort while their kin were in treatment at the hospital. This aim turned into reality with the establishment of Tranquility House, a sanctuary for families during challenging times.
Benson’s accomplishment of Tranquility House was made feasible by the generous contributions of more than 130 organizations and individuals who believed in and supported his vision. The heartening legacy he left behind will lend comfort and peace to numerous families during their most tragic times.
Julian’s surviving family includes his brother Adrian, sister-in-law Rachel, and his cherished nieces and nephew. The Benson family extended their heartfelt gratitude to the Cystic Fibrosis team at St Vincent’s University Hospital for their unwavering support throughout Julian’s life.
They also expressed their sincere appreciation for the team at St. Vincent’s hospital, acknowledging their compassionate care and kindness towards Julian during his last days.
Larry Bass, the boss of Dancing With The Stars, shared in a statement their profound sadness over Julian’s passing. He stated, ‘The demise of our beloved friend Julian Benson has deeply saddened us all. Our very own Captain Sparkle who bestowed so much admiration, brilliance, and talent to the world. His optimistic perspective on life was an inspiration and will continue to inspire many, primarily because of his relentless effort to improve the lives of those around him, especially through his creation of the Julian Benson CF Foundation.’
The enduring legacy of Julian Benson is destined to continue through the establishment of the Julian Benson CF Foundation, which will persist in bettering the lives of many who are battling Cystic Fibrosis.
