The suspect behind a string of targeted political killings in Minnesota reportedly claimed in a rambling letter that Governor Tim Walz instructed him to assassinate U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar.

Vance Boelter, the accused gunman charged with murdering State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, and attempting to kill State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, allegedly made the explosive claim in a letter discovered by law enforcement during their investigation. According to officials, the incoherent message suggested Walz wanted Klobuchar eliminated so he could take her Senate seat.

The FBI recovered the letter along with a handwritten list of over 70 potential political targets in a vehicle Boelter abandoned following the June 14 attacks. Investigators say the suspect appeared to believe he was carrying out a state-sanctioned mission.

Governor Walz has denied any connection to Boelter, calling the accusations “completely false and deranged.” A spokesperson emphasized that the governor is cooperating fully with law enforcement and has expressed support for the victims’ families.

Senator Klobuchar also responded, stating she was “grateful” for the suspect’s capture and urged calm while the investigation proceeds.

Boelter now faces both state and federal charges, including first-degree murder, attempted assassination of public officials, and weapons violations. Prosecutors have not ruled out pursuing the death penalty.
