Argentina’s Milei Honors Trump With Nobel Nomination Gift at White House Summit
Argentine President Javier Milei visited the White House Tuesday to personally thank President Donald Trump for his leadership in promoting global peace, presenting him with a gold-framed copy of Trump’s 2025 Nobel Peace Prize nomination letter.
The symbolic gift came just days after Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, despite growing international recognition for Trump’s role in brokering peace in the Middle East and securing hostage releases through his 20-point ceasefire plan.
“I am very honored, especially in this moment when we are giving thanks for Trump’s great leadership,” Milei said through a translator during a formal dinner with Trump administration officials. “We can follow a peaceful route and make Argentina a strong example for freedom and prosperity.”
The meeting capped a high-stakes visit to Washington following the announcement of a U.S.-backed financial rescue package. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed a $20 billion currency swap and a U.S. commitment to buy Argentine pesos — a lifeline aimed at stabilizing Argentina’s collapsing currency ahead of crucial midterm elections.
“Argentina faces a moment of acute illiquidity,” Bessent said. “Only the United States can act swiftly. And act we will.”
Milei, a staunch libertarian economist and vocal supporter of capitalism, has earned praise for his sweeping economic reforms, which have slashed inflation, drawn foreign investment, and kickstarted growth in one of South America’s most volatile economies. But with midterms looming and his party suffering local setbacks, the U.S. aid package arrives at a critical moment for his presidency.
Trump, who returned just days ago from brokering a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, praised Milei’s vision and reaffirmed U.S. support.
“It’s just helping a great philosophy take over a great country,” Trump said. “Argentina is one of the most beautiful countries that I’ve ever seen, and we want to see it succeed. It’s very simple.”
The Milei-Trump summit underscored a growing alliance between conservative governments in the Western Hemisphere. Milei has previously praised Trump’s “America First” policies, while Trump has lauded the Argentine leader’s commitment to free markets and individual liberty.
Though Trump was passed over for the Nobel this year, Milei’s gesture marked a public show of support from a major Latin American ally, further cementing Trump’s influence on the world stage during his second term in office.
